Feeling Dizzy? Read This!
Written by Sharon Bell
Love, they say, makes the world go round. But if you feel like you’re spinning around on a merry-go-round even if you aren’t in love, you probably have vertigo.
Vertigo is a type of dizziness felt as a sensa¬tion of whirling around in space or as a spinning room. The person who experiences this often has to stop what¬ever he or she is doing and limit movement in order to avoid nausea and vomiting.
Postural vertigo is common in middle-aged people and occurs when turning the head, such as leaning back¬ward or forward or looking up or down. Its cause is unknown although some cases may follow head injury or a stroke. Attacks are brief and may last for a few seconds.
Lack of niacin, which is found in meat liver, poultry, fish and peanuts, may also lead to vertigo as well as weakness and irritability. Or it may be a side effect of a certain drug.
In most people, vertigo usually indicates a distur¬bance of the semicircular canals of the inner ear which help maintain our sense of balance.
“This may come on abruptly and last days or weeks before subsiding. When self-limited and not associated with other neurological signs, the condition is termed labyrinthitis or vestibulitis. Although the cause is unknown, a viral inflammation is suspected in many cases," according to Dr. Timothy A. Pedley in “The Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons Complete Home Medical Guide.”
Excess fluid in the inner ear's semicircular canals found in Meniere’s disease is another possible cause of vertigo. Here, severe dizziness is accompanied by hearing loss and noises in the affected ear.
To determine what your problem is, consult a doc¬tor, preferably an ENT specialist. Don't wait for things to get worse for dizziness is a symptom of many disor¬ders - some simple, some bad.
For minor discomfort and relief of symptoms, you may use non-prescription antivertigenous drugs. Some products cause drowsiness among others so it's important to avoid activities which require alert¬ness when taking these medications.
Permanent relief from vertigo, however, depends on the treatment of the underlying cause. Seek medical help to have peace of mind.
