There are plenty of people who suffer from sciatica pain and it can be excruciating. Sciatica refers to the pain along the sciatica nerve, which runs from the lower back down to the backside of the leg. The pain can be described as a numbing pain, which can be very uncomfortable for the person. The National Board of Chiropractic Examiners states that 9% of chiropractic patients suffer from leg pain and chiropractors treat 70% of these cases.

Chiropractic treatments help in fighting sciatica but it is important that the chiropractor identifies the cause first. Sciatica is not a disease rather, it is a symptom of an underlying cause, which is what the chiropractor needs to assess. Usually, the source of inflammation or compression is a physical one. The American Medical Association lists that a herniated spinal discs is one of the major causes of sciatica. Other causes of sciatica can be degenerative bone spurs, trauma, tumors, infection, muscle spasm, muscle inflammation and spinal vascular abnormalities.

After knowing the root cause, the chiropractor should assess the degree of pain and severity of the sciatica condition. Sciatica happens when the sciatica nerve is compressed. Symptoms of sciatica include numbness, loss of reflexes and muscle weakness. There will be tests done to make sure that the sciatica condition is still treatable through chiropractic care or will need surgery already. No chiropractor will use chiropractic treatments in fighting sciatica without proper evaluation.

There is a rare case where in sciatica is accompanied with loss of bladder or bowel control. There is a tingling in the genital area. This is quite serious and the patient will be advised to undergo surgery instead. On the other hand, if surgery is not required, the chiropractor can proceed with a conservative treatment. The chiropractic treatment will depend on the sciatica case of the patient. Fighting sciatica can be done through spinal manipulation as it maximizes the mobility of the patient’s spinal joints. Ice therapy can be used to reduce inflammation in the area. To reduce the pressure on the discs, traction may be used. A variety of exercises will be introduced to regain mobility as well as gain strength and stability in the lower spine.

Chiropractors treat patients through several sessions. This is one way of monitoring the progress of the patients. Every month or so, they will evaluate the changes and will know if the treatment is working or not. This gives the chiropractor room to make some changes in the treatment plan. The chiropractor will have to monitor the pain level, quality of pain and the frequency of pain. Daily activities like walking, sitting, bending and standing are some ways to evaluate the improvement in the sciatica condition of the patient. Normally, results will only be seen after 4 weeks of chiropractic treatment.

Sciatica is a painful condition at the lower back of the spine and it can really give you much discomfort in your day-to-day activities. To prevent your sciatica from getting worse, seek the help of a chiropractor in fighting sciatica.
