Americans, or around 6 percent of the population, abuse or are dependent on alcohol. Furthermore, tens of thousands of people, many of them children, try it for the first time every day. Because it is legal and widely available, liquor is arguably America’s most dangerous drug. But why can some people handle it and others cannot?
That is the question researchers have been trying to answer for decades. Generally speaking, there are two types of people who use alcohol to excess—abusers and alcoholics. An abuser may drink to excess and his drinking may lead to problems in his personal and professional lives, but he will not develop a physical addiction. This occurs when a person imbibes alcohol on a regular basis and his body begins to become accustomed to it and later to crave it.
Like other drugs, alcohol stimulates the reward or pleasure centers of the brain. After a while, the brain will require more and more liquor to keep it satisfied. An alcoholic who does not imbibe booze on a regular basis will experience symptoms of withdraw, just as a heroin addict would. He may sweat profusely, his hands may shake, and he will generally just feel lousy. The symptoms will abate over time, but most alcoholics cannot ignore them. The relapse rate for heavy drinkers is about as high as it is for those who abuse illicit drugs, like methamphetamines and cocaine.

We don’t know much, but we do know that addiction is a disease of the brain. We also know that addiction often has a stronger hold on younger users. This is because the adolescent brain is different from the adult brain. When a teenager becomes dependant on alcohol, it can be even more difficult for him to stop. For one thing, he may be unwilling to seek help, since he is technically breaking the law, i.e., underage drinking. Secondly, he may not know that he has a problem until it is too late.
The good news is that there are special Tulsa alcohol rehab facilities that cater to younger addicts. If a parent or guardian observes a problem, they should refrain from scolding or punishing their children. Treatment options can be quite effective for young people, but they must be applied as soon as possible.
Because it is a difficult time of life, most young adults need more than some Tulsa alcohol rehab centers can provide. In addition to treating their drug dependence, they will also require therapy to help them understand why they use and abuse alcohol. More often than not there is a simple reason they may not be ready to face outside of a Tulsa rehab facility.
Most rehabilitation centers are not designed with the needs of young people in mind. They cater to the average alcoholic, who may have had a problem with liquor for decades. Obviously, a young person who has only been a drinker for a year will require a different combination of treatments so that they can return to a normal life and pursue their goals.
