Okay, so you have taken a leap in faith and said “yes” to go on the first date. Breathe! The most important thing to do is relax and remind yourself that the other person is in the same boat as you are. The last thing you want to do is have your nerves cause problems so you are unable to focus properly on the date itself and understand why you got together in the first place.nn Clearly set the boundaries prior to going on the date, if you intend to go “Dutch”. No need for extra embarrassment as to who is flipping the bill. Avoid subjecting yourself to any further stress and scrutiny than necessary.nn Remember to leave yourself plenty of time to prepare for the first meeting. Isn’t it funny how time seems to speed by when we are not quite ready and things can always go wrong when we are rushed and want them to be just right?nn Always try to meet in a public place or advise someone of your whereabouts until you have assured yourself of the intentions of your new acquaintance.nn Remind yourself that you are in control as much as your date is. Ask questions and find out about their interests, dislikes, hobbies and goals. I suggest you try to stay away from heavy topics such as religion and politics. There will be plenty of opportunity to discuss these more personal subjects should you wish to further your acquaintance.nn Observe the body language and try to determine as early on in the date as possible whether the feelings of interest or disinterest are mutual. It is much easier to prepare for the end of the date if you have some idea on what to expect.nn Lastly, take it slow. If the feelings are genuine, they will still be floating around for the next time. Give yourself the time to reflect before you commit to another outing. Ask yourself if and why you want to see this individual again. Are their intentions the same as yours? Most of all, do they make you look forward to your next “rendez-vous”, before it is even in the works? nn
