There are many things you can do to help alleviate depression both in yourself and in your loved ones. To begin with, eating a healthy diet free of junk food and sugary products can lay the foundation for defeating this affliction.

Basically, depression is caused by a combination of negative thinking, an inappropriate lifestyle, (including the type of job, friends and family relationships one has), and nutritional deficiencies.

Plenty of research has shown that a diet high in sugar and omega 6 oils, such as corn oil and other frying oils can actually lead to depression in sensitive individuals. Research has also shown that certain nutrients can help alleviate depression and that depression can actually be caused by a deficiency in these nutrients.

There are two supplements which are essential in treating depression: A high quality, molecularly distilled, concentrated fish oil and a broad-spectrum multivitamin containing specific natural ingredients that fight off depression.

Concentrated fish oil. Fish oil is high in DHA, a polyunsaturated fatty acid which forms a large percentage of the matter of the brain. Scientists have shown that DHA actually needs to be replaced within a window of opportunity of two weeks. Not getting enough DHA for two weeks can actually cause a deficiency. This deficiency can cause depression, ADHD and even schizophrenia. DHA is one of the most important substances in the brain.

Broad-spectrum multivitamin. It is also essential to supplement with a natural multivitamin which contains nutrients that specifically nourish the brain, such as SAMe, tri-methyl glycine acetyl l carnitine and lipoic acid. Multivitamins sold in pharmacies and made by pharmaceutical companies generally do not contain these ingredients.

By taking a concentrated fish oil and top-quality multivitamin every day, you can get great results in cases of mild, moderate and sometimes even severe depression. It is important to note that supplements are not enough. By combining supplements with a diet low in omega 6 fats, low in sugar and low in processed foods and high in vegetables and fresh whole foods, your chances of beating depression are much higher.

Combining these with a more positive outlook, exercise and better relationships and a stronger social network, you can work wonders in your life and in that of others.
