Foreclosure battered Nevada State will be the main battleground for 2012 presidential elections. A debate will be held by the Republican camp in the glittering casinos of the state but the focus will be on the foreclosure hit localities that lie beyond the bright lights of Las Vegas.
Las Vegas has been one of the worst hit cities – battered by the crisis and the recession. It will be the prize that will be hotly competed for in the next election where economic issues will dominate the scenario. Las Vegas ranks first in foreclosures. The unemployment rate is also one of the highest.
One sixth of the residents of this area have been worried about their next meal during the past month observed a food bank operating in the area – Three Square. A resident, Linda Overby is a painter who has been without work since last April. He said many others like him are desperate.
Although it is unlikely that the economy will recover soon the residents of Las Vegas will be showered with attention from the presidential candidates during the forthcoming months. Nevada has been has always given support to the winning candidate from 1976; it is one of the few states that will decide the outcome of the elections in 2012.
This time the early caucus of the state set tentatively for 14th January will also have a heavy influence in the primary race within the Republican party; some of the candidates are however are warning that they will not vote here. The squabble is over in which state the primaries should be held first.
The caucus, the first in this region of the West, features a good number of independent as well as Hispanic voters; relatively the Christian conservatives are few in number. The latter play a significant role in the early contests elsewhere.
The Republican Party of Nevada State will get an opportunity to set up an organization to counter the machine of Harry Reid, the Democratic leader of the Senate. It had been instrumental in helping Obama become the president in 2008. Last year it pushed through Reid during a tough battle during the re-elections in 2010.
In Nevada the Democrat registered voters outnumber the Republics by 100,000. Reid and his colleagues are already preparing the groundwork for the coming year. A conference lasting for three days will focus on victory in Nevada and other states (mountain) of the West. Obama will be visiting Nevada on 24th October.
