Formula for Successful Business Online Step 1: Know Who You Are
Written by Ellie Yamane
So you want to build your business online. Why? So you can quit your job? Do you want to be rich and famous? Build a top internet empire? Become a self-made millionaire? But why do you want these things? What is it you really want?
Sigmund Freud said that everything we do springs from two motives; the sexual urge and the desire to be great. I’m not going to talk about the first one because it’s pretty easy and obvious. But does that mean everything else in life have something do with our desire to be great?
It makes a lot of sense if you think about it, but in order to stay on course with the topic here, I’m going to focus on how it relates to building a business. If you are reading this, you are looking to start or have already started your own business. You want to be your own boss, make a lot of money, and live a nice life style, as a lot of us do. The thing is, you can have all of these things and still be miserable. See, it’s our desire to be great. It’s our craving to be important, respected, loved, and things of these nature. Think about it for a second. Deep down, these are what it really comes down to.
A career coach Laura Berman Fortgang said everybody who comes to her for help in finding a career direction, says they want to do something more meaningful. Even if you are successful in your career, if you don’t find it meaningful, something must be off. Perhaps what you do currently is not aligned with who you are, or your values. We have the desire to be great, to contribute, to make a difference, and you need to find a way that allows you to do so while staying true to yourself.
What it means is knowing yourself holds a big key to your sense of satisfaction, and ultimately, success. Without identity, you are no different from the next person. The key to your true success starts within you, and that’s where it always comes back to. So here are some questions you should ask yourself as the first step of starting your own business.
What are your beliefs and mission?
What’s your style and personality?
What are your strength?
What’s different and unique about you that makes people want to do business with you?
What’s your goal?
Who are you?
Keep in mind this is an on-going process, and you need to continue learning and growing. Getting started is by far the toughest part, but the work doesn’t stop there. You will need to continue defining and reinventing yourself, and stay focused on your goals and what’s important to you. If you stay stagnant, so will your business. If you lose your focus, you may forget what you are in it for and eventually fail. Neither of which are great, and that’s what it’s really about, right?
