Freedom From Genital Herpes - Things You Should Know

Genital herpes is a common viral infection that affects millions of people. In the United States, there are reports that in every four Americans aged 18 and above, one has been infected by the virus causing genital herpes. Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 (HSV-2) causes genital herpes. Getting the virus can be really disturbing and can affect one's sexual and personal life. Freedom from genital herpes is important to stop suffering from the inconvenience of having the infection and to stop spreading the virus.
This infection is highly contagious and can be transmitted through skin to skin contact and sexual intercourse with an infected person. An infected person who has the potential of transferring the viral infection might have symptoms like sores or blisters on the lips, skin and genitals but the viral infection can also be passed on by an infected person even without visible sores or symptoms. Most infected people do not know they have the infection because they do not have symptoms so majority of infected people could pass the infection to others without knowing it. It is important to know how to achieve freedom from genital herpes to stop transmitting the virus.
If symptoms do occur, one or more blisters may appear in and around the mouth, genital area and rectum. Fever, muscle pains and headache may also be experienced by the sufferer. The symptoms may go away without treatment after 3 to 4 weeks but after the first outbreak, it is common to have a second outbreak after weeks or months. Genital herpes is a problem that could torment you over and over again for a long period of time. It is important to find the right treatment to achieve freedom from genital herpes and free yourself from recurring infections.
Half of those who are infected by the virus are unaware that they have the virus due to lack of symptoms, the only way to know if you are infected is by getting tested for HSV-2 virus, A blood test can tell if you are infected by herpes simplex virus.
Once you found you are positive for HSV-2, you can spread the virus and can suffer from recurring herpes flare up. One important thing to consider if you found out that you have the infection is to talk to your partner about it. Have your partner checked for the presence of the virus to avoid re-infecting each other and minimize future outbreaks.
There are various treatments to achieve freedom from genital herpes and avoid recurring infection. Anti-viral medication is the common treatment for herpes; the approved medications for herpes are acyclovir, famciclovir and valacyclovir. It is best to consult your doctor to know the best medicine that will work for your condition. If you are in pain and have fever, your doctor may prescribe pain reliever and medications for your fever. With the right medications, sores will heal rapidly and outbreaks will be reduced or stopped.
Aside from medications, there are things you can do to achieve freedom from genital herpes like avoid touching the sores and keep the infected area clean to speed up healing. Get the necessary rest or sleep, balanced diet and live a healthy lifestyle to boost your immune system. A weak immune system makes you prone to infections so to fight infections and diseases you need a strong immune system. Abstain from sexual contact while you are being treated to avoid making the condition worse.
