Frugal Traveler: How to Reduce Luggage Weight While Travelling
Written by Edward Hanson
Airlines are progressively making travelers pay extra for things that used to be included in the ticket price. One of the most overpriced add-ons in the recent years is the substantial charges for checked luggage.
Not so long ago most carriers permitted two or three checked bags of up to seventy pounds each without charge. Now, you are fortunate if you are allowed even one free bag.
On domestic flights like in Air Canada currently allows one checked bag weighing up to 50 pounds. If it is oversized or overweight the passenger is charge with a monstrous one hundred dollar price! Also, continental charges twenty-five dollars for the first checked bag in the United States, and permits one bag of fifty pounds aboard. The EVA Air permits two quantities, each weighing up to fifty pounds for a total of 100 pounds.
Clearly under the new rules and regulations, traveling light make lots of sense and can result in bigsavings for the smart packer. A few simple guidelines can keep money in your own wallet, and out of the airline's.
Be sure that you know and understand your carrier’s luggage rules and charges before starting to pack. Each of the airlines is different and the guidelines are always changing. Always scale your bags before going to the airport. With airlines charging a hundred dollars or more for just a few extra pounds, it is not worth believing to luck.
Make certain the bag doesn't surpass the size requirements. The same consequences can apply to over-size as overweight and that additionalinch can show to be lavish.
Keep in mind that there are also rules for weight and size of carry-on bags. Exceeding these limits could effect in having to check your carry-on, which means having to pay for an additional checked bag.
If you are traveling with someone, you must spread the weight evenly. Necessarily one partner chooses to travel light, while the other one wants to take everything in the house.
Pack and travel with lightweight clothing, shoes and accessories. Stick to clothing that can be easily washed and dried overnight, as lesser will be needed.
Never pack heavy items such as irons or hairdryers because most of the hotels provide it for free.
The easiest way to keep your luggage costs down is to keep asking yourself if you truly need it. If the answer is no, then don’t pack it.
Careful planning can compensate in huge savings. Mistakes can be expensive, and once you have arrived at the check-in, it is very late. If you have more bags than allowed, then you will be priced for the extra pieces. An overweight or over-sized bag is an even bigger issue that can effect in having to throw some items in the junk, or pay a big penalty.
The smart traveler can reduce the cost down by doing the homework. Booking online makes it stress-free to assess each airline's rules, and avail the best price, with the most good luggage allowance.
