Gain your knowledge about Geotechnical Instrumentation?
Written by Lewis carroll
Many times I heard about geotechnical instrumentation but never got a chance to understand it. Fortunately this time I got a dedicated article on this topic. Geotechnical instrumentation is a process that is carried out for collecting data that helps engineers in each stage of a project. Its applications include site investigations, design verification, construction control, quality control, safety, legal protection, performance, critical parameters, measurement of environmental conditions and many more.
Each one of us knows that every project encompasses a certain set of critical parameters. The designer must need to know those parameters and then choose instruments to measure them. How much and what type of information is needed for the basic design? When the parameters are determined, the specification for instruments must include the required range, resolution, and accuracy of measurements.
Geotechnical instrumentation is meant to determine the effects of construction. Instrument data can help the engineer determine how fast construction can move further downsizing the risk of failure. Geotechnical instrumentation can be used both to enhance the quality of workmanship on a project and to document that work was done to specifications. Instruments can provide prior warning of impending failures, enabling time for safe evacuation of the area and time to implement remedial action. Safety monitoring requires quick retrieval, processing, and presentation of data, so that decisions can be made promptly.
These Instruments are widely used to monitor the in-service performance of a structure. For example, monitoring parameters such as leakage, pore-water pressure, and deformation can provide an indication of the performance of a dam. Monitoring loads on tiebacks or rock bolts and movements within a slope can provide an indication of the performance of a drainage system installed in a stabilized slope.
At of now, there are many companies in the market which offer a range of geotechnical and structural monitoring expertise. They work right from the design of an initial monitoring scheme to data assessment and report writing. If you want to look for any such service provider for any of your projects, you can find them online. However, make sure that you choose an experienced and professional company to do the job.
I am quite hopeful that the information given above will help you choose the best geotechnical instrumentation service provider for your job. This is because I gathered this information for knowledge purpose that helped me a lot in understanding the term better.
