Many people have apprehension about going to the dentist. Maybe they have had a bad experience or fear of the unknown. Either way, a visit to the dentist should not be avoided. The longer it is put off, the more chances there are for dental problems. There are many reasons a person will not go to the dentist. They may not understand what the dentist is doing or that cosmetic and general dentistry is the same. Also, there are costs involved, and one may not understand what they need to be prepared for financially. For some who have not been to the dentist because they have been afraid, it has been a long time since the last visit. For instance if I had stopped going to the dentist after my first visit, because of the pain I felt when they pulled a tooth. I would not have known the topical gel they apply before they give you a shot. Now I do not even feel the needle. Each time I go, there is something new. Lasers, shots, topical gels, flavorings and comprehensive x-rays. I know when I go, my dentist is very gentle and soothing to me, always making sure that I feel no pain or anxiety. One of my friends even takes a pill before each visit that her dentist prescribed to help her stay calm before each contact. Some people do not know that general dentistry can prescribe medication to help with the anxiety of each dental visit. General dentistry's main goal is for everyone to have a healthy mouth. Ever since we were young we have been taught how to brush our teeth, even in school. I remember having to chew those nasty tasting pink pills. After you chewed them, they would leave pink spots on the spots that you missed. Every year a week would be dedicated to dental hygiene. So what makes a cosmetic dentist any different? Well, of course they want you to have healthy teeth, but they want you to look great. Have a beautiful smile, that lines up nicely and at the same time provides you with all the functional needs that you have for your teeth. It is recommended that a person visit the dentist every six months for a cleaning and examination. There is a very good reason why. If you do not have that regular exam, then ugly things will build up and lead to decay and pain. So, the main point is prevention. It is totally worth it. If you have ever had to have a root canal or even just a filling, it is uncomfortable and if one can avoid it they should. Many insurances will cover the maintenance visits to have general dentistry work done. But, one should always check with their insurance before committing to any cosmetic work to be done. It may cover some, or none at all. One might be surprised as to the cost of some these procedures. It certainly pays to do a little research, because it may be more affordable to pay out of your pocket. Teeth whitening is a common example. Sometimes you might find that a little sacrifice will go a long way in having a beautiful smile. Again, I know how scary going to dentist is, but I also know that two small visits a year are much enjoyable than that major one where you have to have extensive work done because you did not do the preventive steps.
