Keep smiling Image Source: Sheknows.com The Cheshire Cat made famous by Lewis Carroll in Alice in Wonderland, was known for having a mischievous, self-satisfied grin. Anyone with beautiful teeth likes to show them off and the Cheshire Cat was, evidently no exception! But rather than flashing them in a smug grin, a lovely set of teeth are better put to use in a warm smile which brightens up anybody’s day. The sad fact is that, people with teeth which are unsightly through lack of care or plain unlucky genetics, are usually shy to show their teeth so end up smiling with their lips sealed. This can come across as looking ungenerous and sober. It just doesn’t have the same effect on the smiler or the recipient as a whole-hearted open smile. Luckily, dental implants can transform a set of teeth from causing embarrassment to causing pride and joy. Dental implants explained Put simply, a dental implant is a replacement for a natural tooth. It has a cylindrical or screw-shaped appearance and is fitted into precisely-shaped sockets which are carefully drilled at specific locations in the mouth. An implant can be screwed or gently tapped into place with the aim of making close contact with the surrounding bone for initial stability. In time, the bone and tissue grows and connects with the implant material. The majority of modern-day implants are made with titanium or titanium alloy which are widely-accepted and tolerated by bone. Dental terms which are associated with implants are 'osseointegrated' or 'endosseous’. These describe implants which can meld well with bones for the best anchorage. Implants make a strong foundation for crowns, dentures and bridges. Before treatment It is standard professional practice to provide patients with a written plan summarising treatment. This will cover the current dental condition of the patient and outline any alternative to dental implants if they exist. It should also detail the exact stages of treatment and how long the process is expected to take from the beginning to full healing. This plan should also include the projected fees so there can be no doubt about eventual cost for sound budgeting. Who can have implants? Undertaking an implants programme is not for everybody. It is important to be in very good health before undergoing the process. Heavy smoking and drinking can impede the healing process following implants work and extend to a negative long-term impact in the health of surrounding gums and bones. In fact, for this reason, many dentists will decline working with patients who cannot either give smoking up or reduce how many cigarettes they smoke a day. Dental implant How long it takes The dental implants procedure can be anything from six weeks to six months depending on a number of factors. An implant is fixed in the mouth then, when the conditions are ready, the tooth is placed on top of it. The better quality the bone existing in a patient’s mouth the shorter the process will be. However, if the patient has poor bone quality, the process can take longer than six months. It is important to be patient when it comes to cosmetic dental work as a client will be living with the results for years to come. How long will they last? Once the implant procedure has been completed, new teeth are correctly adjusted and surrounding soft tissues are in good health, it is up to the patient to exercise good oral health care in order to keep everything in order. This means regular brushing and flossing as with natural teeth and routine follow up checks with the dental professional who carried out the work. Badly cared for implants can lead to plaque and calculus deposits just as with natural teeth. These unhealthy deposits can lead to bleeding, gum infection and soreness. On the other hand, if implants are well cared for, the patient can expect years or even a lifetime of use from them. Routine maintenance appointments will ensure that they are in the best possible condition. During the first few months after treatment, it may be necessary to visit the dentist quite frequently to make sure that the implant work is in good order. Once the works appear to developing well, the appointments will become less frequent. What kind of sedation? If an implant procedure is going to be lengthy, it could affect whether a patient has a sedative or a general anaesthetic. Depending on a patient’s individual case, there are several options available to create a relaxed state. These range from mild sedation for relaxation during short procedures to a general anaesthetic and hospital admittance for the most complicated. However, the latter is very rare for dental implant patients with a milder relaxant more common and as effective.
