Public opinion about drug use tends to oscillate between sympathy and condemnation. How can we explain these ambivalent opinions about a problem that is so widespread? Yes, drug use in America could quite rightly be called an epidemic. According to recent estimates, substance abuse costs the United States more than 600 billion dollars per annum, mostly due to health and crime-related costs. About half of the inmates in federal prisons are there because of drugs.

People who do not use drugs often have a hard time understanding the addict, which accounts for the erratic nature of the public discourse. While it is true that all drug addicts began taking their substance of choice voluntarily, the changes these drugs effectuate, especially in the brain, can make it almost impossible for them to stop on their own.

The clinical definition of drug addiction describes it as a brain disease that causes addicted individuals to compulsively seek their substance of choice, even if they know that it is bad for them. A person who is in the grip of a powerful addiction will not act reasonably or be able to function in normal society. Because his brain craves the drug, it becomes the most important thing in his life. Fortunately, treatment is available.

We do not yet know why some people become addicts and others can remain casual users for life. The mystery may be explained by some combination of family history, life experience, psychology, or genes. However, we do know that addicts are addicts for life. An alcoholic or a drug user cannot casually imbibe, inhale, or inject his drug of choice without becoming addicted all over again. It is for this reason that Tulsa Detox centers were created.

Yes, their primary purpose is to separate people from drugs. But that is only the first step. It may seem like the hardest one, but it’s not. Most drugs get users hooked because they are chemically addictive. As we mentioned, the brain begins to crave them. But when they are taken away, the addict will slowly return to normal. In other words, his brain will not punish him for not providing the drugs it desires. He will no longer suffer symptoms of drug withdraw, which include headaches, hand tremors, excessive sweating, and loss of appetite. Most Tulsa Detox centers can handle this first step without incident. They can separate addicts from their drug of choice. But they cannot ensure that he will not start taking it as soon as he gets back out on the streets.

What is the answer?

Unfortunately, there isn’t one. Drug addiction is not a uniform disorder. It is different for every addict. There are no guarantees where treatment is conce
ed. But as with any disease, the best outcomes often result when a person finds a Tulsa holistic rehab facility that offers the treatments he needs. Holistic therapy at Tulsa Detox centers focuses on the person as a whole, including his mind, spirit, and body. It does this in the hope that it will help him understand why he uses drugs. If the addict can understand the underlying factors and causes of his addiction, he may be able to take back control of his life and say goodbye to drugs and alcohol forever.
