Delayed flights are common – but they are also a major difficulty, depending on where you are, where you’re going, and why you’re traveling. They can be an inconvenience – or they can be something more.

Because of that, it’s really important to know what rights you have when it comes to compensation for delayed flights. Let’s take a look at some of the information around this common question.

Why Would You Get Flight Delay Compensation?

Obviously, the inconvenience is enough of a reason to seek compensation for a delayed flight, but there are some more dire reasons that you may need to consider such a thing as well. For example, if the flight is delayed to the next day, you should never have to pay for accommodations!

Another common reason that you may need to get compensation is because the delay is causing some sort of hardship. For example, you may end up being late to a job interview because your plane got delayed. Or maybe you will be missing a performance, a graduation, or even a funeral due to the delay in question.

In those instances, you deserve to be compensated more than the basics that airports typically offer. Most of the time, you will have to go to an outside source to make that happen, which we will discuss later in this article.

What is Considered to Be a Delayed Flight?

Obviously, any flight that does not leave on time is considered to be a delayed flight. If a flight is delayed by less than a half an hour, it may make little to no difference when it comes to your arrival time, and therefore, not be a major case.

When you start going past the half hour mark, however, you are going to find that things may become problematic. Compensation should be sought for any delay, but it’s important to get what you deserve when you get past the 3 hour mark.

What Rights Do I Have for Compensation for Delayed Flights?

The compensation for delayed flights is going to vary based on the country that you are departing from. In the European Union, they start offering more compensation when you get past the 3 hour mark. Typically, you will get anywhere from 250 Euros all of the way up to 600 Euros, depending on how long you have to wait and how far your trip is.

In the EU, you can also get additional services, including free meals, soft drinks, uses of fax and wi-fi, accommodations if necessary, transportation to those accommodates, and more. In cases of 5 hour plus delays, you can also request reimbursement or a return flight to the first point of departure, if you’re at a layover location.

In the United States, they do not offer monetary compensation for delays as of yet. Airlines are also not required to give any sort of compensation, but many do as a solid business practice. They typically will offer food, water, and access to a shower if the delay is 3 hours (domestic) and 4 hours (international). They may also offer vouchers for future trips, but that’s ultimately dependent on the airline.

Other countries, like Israel and certain areas of Asia, also have their own laws based on the amount of time you’re waiting and how far your flight is. Some countries are stricter about their compensation laws than others, and it’s important to know your rights and to work out what it is that you may need as a result of the delay in question.

How Can I Get What I Deserve Here?

For many delay situations, the majority of major airlines will try to compensate you in some form or fashion – but sometimes, you aren’t going to get exactly what you deserve based on the laws of the locality in question. Because of that, you may need to look elsewhere in order to get what you need here.

Smaller airlines may not offer as much in compensation, based on their size. But, they do have to adhere to any locality’s laws related to compensation, no matter what their size.

Working with a company like AirAdvisor to get your hands on flight delay compensation can be a really big deal. There are a handful of companies that work primarily on these sorts of jobs, ensuring that you can get money or other forms of compensation as a result of your delay.

Working with the right people and getting the information that you need can go a long way. You can work a lot of things out and make sure that you are doing the best that you can in order to stay ahead of everything. As you determine a way forward, you want to be certain that you get what you deserve and are able to make sense of just what you need after a delayed flight.
