Getting Started on Your Website
Written by Shawn Babbie
You may want a website for several reasons – to promote a product or service, to showcase your own creative work and more. Going to professionals to get your website up and running can be a very expensive affair. If you plan to do it on your own, here are the basics to getting your site running. The first is to select a domain name or basically the address at which your site will be available. This can be a .com, .org, .edu and the like. Getting a domain name that is also a keyword for your site will work in your favor tremendously. Keep in mind that simply by getting the name you don’t get the space online to start a website.
You will need to register your domain name through a registrar who will ensure that no other person or entity will be able to register the name once you have paid for it. The payments are normally done on an annual basis. You could also choose to register your domain name with a website host, but if you are not too sure about the credibility of the host, then you may want to rethink the entire affair.
Considering the kind of competition there is around you in terms of services and products, chances are someone else may have registered the name you have in mind. It is therefore very important that you act as fast as possible. Once you decide on a name, look for the closest other options around and keep them handy. At the time of registration, you could then use any of them to finalize on a domain name.
The next step is to tie-up with web hosting company. When you do so, you will be connecting to a network of computers that will make the web pages on your site available to everyone in the virtual world. You need to check on the credentials of the company and the cost of hosting your pages online on their servers. Some of the things you need to look into are guarantee on up time that the company will offer you, the number of email ids that can be associated with your domain and other interactivity facilities that will be available.
Web hosting is available for a range of budgets. But do not be fooled by the exceptionally low rates you may be offered. Such services can be dubious. Once you have the space to start a website, it is up to you to create one that is interactive and will get you the footfall you require.
