Arjuna Penance

Built on two rock-stones on the shore, Arjuna Penance is one of the popular attractions of Mahabalipuram. Carved in the seventh century, Arjuna Penance is around 30m (100ft) long and 15m (45ft) high. Exhaustive carvings here depict the mesmerizing interpretation of animals. Named after Arjuna, the place holds a significant place in the epic of Mahabharata. The belief that Arjuna, one of the five Pandava bothers, completed his penance here by standing on one leg makes it more popular. Another reason of visiting the place is show scenes of Panchatantra, which was written by Vishnu Sharma in the 2nd century.

Shore Temples

These major landmarks of Mahabalipuram are amazingly beautiful. Dedicated to Lord Shiva and Vishnu, the temples are the most fascinating attractions of the town. Enriched with beauty and history, the temples date back to 8th century. Nestled on the shore of Bay of Bengal, the temples retain its old world charm.
