Hyperglycemia is one of the key characteristics of diabetes especially type 1 or type 2 diabetes. The disease has a cure and be controlled and kicked off. Diabetes treatment in Nagpur and other cities of India have their own set of Ayurvedic cure and remedies for the best relief.

High blood sugar is caused when the body fails to metabolize sugars efficiently. One of the best remedies for high blood sugar is to control diet and lead a healthy life. Being calorie conscious is important. However, on the practical front, you cannot count calories for every food you eat. A better alternative is to control portion sizes and be choosy about what you eat.

There is one very important aspect to consider. All foods that go into the body are converted into sugars or more precisely, into glucose. However, the speed at which they are metabolized varies depending upon their composition.

People who have high blood sugar should take care to choose foods which are metabolized slowly so that blood sugar does not peak suddenly. As a thumb rule, people with hyperglycemia should eat meals which satisfy four basic conditions – low carbohydrates, low sugars, low saturated fats and high fibres and proteins. Read on below for a brief dietary guide for hyperglycemic people.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are easily converted into glucose and so, they cause the blood sugar level to increase drastically after meals. Nevertheless, carbohydrates are necessary for the body since they are the major source of energy. So, hyperglycemic people should quit eating foods which contain simple carbohydrates and eat foods which contain complex carbohydrates. Six servings of carbohydrates per day are good for hyperglycemic. It is recommended that carbohydrates be consumed in various forms rather than a single kind of food. The energy obtained from carbohydrates should be less than 50% of the total energy obtained from all foods.

Simple carbohydrates such as sugar, refined flours, bakery foods such as cakes and biscuits and soft drinks should be avoided by people with diabetes problems. Instead, complex carbohydrates such as potatoes, bananas, whole-grain foods, root vegetables, lentils, nuts and wholegrain cereals should be consumed. Complex carbohydrates are digested very gradually and so, the blood sugar level does not shoot up drastically and instantaneously. The sugar level is maintained approximately constant. Simple carbohydrates digest very quickly and cause blood sugar to peak, which is not desirable.

Proteins

Proteins are necessary for energy and muscular strength. The good thing about proteins is that they metabolize very slowly and therefore, do not cause a drastic increase in blood sugar. Proteins should form a major part of the diet for hyperglycemic people.

Meals should include lean meat, legumes, beans, wheat, nuts and seeds. 35% of the meal should be made up of proteins. Including whole wheat, bread is a good way to get their desirable calories. Vegetarians should include mushrooms and soy products in their meals because both these are the foods richest in proteins. 45g to 50g of proteins should be consumed every day in the form of natural foods. Proteins drinks and shakes should only be used as supplements.

Fats

Unsaturated fats, omega 3 fatty acids and polyunsaturated fats are as essential for the body as carbohydrates and proteins. Good sources are fish, egg, dairy and nuts. For cooking, refined vegetable oil or olive oil is the best option.

Other ingredients in a meal

High water-soluble dietary fibre content is extremely essential in a hyperglycemic diet. This can be achieved in the form of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Fruits and vegetables also take care of the vitamins and minerals necessary for the body. Sugary and starchy fruits and vegetables should be restricted to a single helping and other kinds of fruits and vegetables can be eaten without restraint. Always keep in mind to eat foods which are grown naturally and organically. Such foods are higher in nutritional value. Seasonal fruits and vegetables are highly recommended.
