Google's Legalize Love Campaign
Written by Karen Barney
Google is a large supporter of gay rights and recently started their Legalize Love campaign, a worldwide effort to promote human rights and end workplace discrimination. Hopefully, this will be just the beginning of the worldwide effort to bring about equality for everyone.
Google has recently been a large supporter of gay rights. With their “Legalize Love” campaign, Google has taken some steps toward helping gay and lesbian people gain more rights. The focus is mainly on countries where anti-homosexual measures have been put into place. For example, Singapore has some homosexual activities listed as illegal, and Poland, which has no recognition of same-sex partnerships.
This campaign might not be particularly popular with some people, but it is an important step toward securing the rights of homosexual people. For example, even if the only thing this campaign creates is awareness in these anti-homosexual nations, it will produce a positive outcomer
As part of their campaign, Google plans on recruiting local businesses and companies to help promote their message. This grassroots campaign has a greater likelihood of success than just trying to go through a computer medium. Grassroots campaigns work by enlisting people rather than just posting a message. A point is a lot easier to get across when you have dedicated people behind it that are willing to put a face with the message in question. Politicians have long known that grassroots campaigns are more effective than just a commercial or advertisement campaign. Google seems to have bought into this idea wholeheartedly, and as a result, they are more likely to succeed in their mission than if they were to simply launch an email, ad, or website campaign.
Google has long been a supporter of equality within their company. They have prided themselves as being fair to people of all backgrounds, only now they are encouraging others to take part as well. Google has been hailed as one of the top companies to work for by the Human Rights Campaign, and they currently provide the same full benefits to same sex couples that they would to married men and women.
Contrary to what many media outlets have reported, Legalize Love is not a worldwide campaign for the legalization of same sex marriage. This campaign is about the preservation of human rights and ending employer discrimination. Google’s values are already in tune with these things and they are hoping that by enlisting other companies to adopt these values alongside them that more and more people can attain a happier and freedom-filled life—regardless of their lifestyle and sexual preferences.
By stepping forward and vocalizing their beliefs, Google is doing something very admirable. Speaking up is not always easy, especially when your opinion is not always a popular one. Many companies would fear doing this because of the potential for loss of business, but hopefully, Google will be the first of many companies around the world to take on this stance because equality is something that everyone deserves.
