Gray hair has always been one of most embarrassing issues that we all try to avoid at any cost. But, most of us fail to do so. Every year, people shell out millions of dollars on hair products and medicines that prevent the graying of hair. Everyone tries their best to slow down the process of aging. But, only a few of them get the desired results. According to a fact, around 40 percent of Americans suffer from graying of hair when they are at their 40’s. However, that does not rule out the possibility of children and young adults do not get gray hair. So, the question that normally pops up inside every person’s mind is why does hair turn gray? Well, genetics is one of the prime reasons that trigger the graying of hair. Apart from it, hormonal changes, tobacco, and stress are the other reasons to cause gray hair.

As people age, the level of pigmentation in their hair comes down. In other words, the hair ceases to produce melanin. Melanin is a chemical that gives color to your hair. So, when the production of melanin slows down, your hair follicle loses vibrancy. As a result, the dark color of your hair starts to turn into a gray one. Eventually, when the production of melanin turns out to zero, the color of your hair becomes completely gray. Now you certainly have the answer to the question: why does hair turn gray?

Fortunately, there have been some positive developments in this field of medical science. Scientists are trying to figure out the working of certain genes that are considered to play a vital role in graying of hair. In addition, French scientists have even figured out that the cancer drug used for the treatment of leukemia showed positive results in the treatment of gray hair as well. Patients who suffered from gray hair before taking the cancer drug observed black color was reinstated to their hair. And, the research work is still going on.

You may come across several hair products in the market claiming to stop gray hair; however none of them seem to be effective. People have tried supplements, vitamin capsules, and other similar products, but each of them turns out to be ineffective. Hair dye can be used to cover up your gray hair, but it is good to avail the services of a hair care expert, because they can do it in a better way with 100 percent coverage.
