Grilling Tips for Shrimp Recipes
Written by Jahnne Ruddock
Shrimp are found to be the most popular shellfish in the world and the most popular and valuable shellfish among Americans. Today, modern production had made it possible to bring more shrimp on the table than before. There are various ways to cook shrimp to bring out its natural flavor but most people do not know how to cook them correctly even just by simply steaming them. What more if you try grilling them? Cooking shrimps on a grill is not any different in grilling your steaks or any kind of meat.
Deveining shrimps when grilling had brought a lot of issues as well. The truth is whether you devein them or not doesn’t really affect the taste of the shrimp nor will it bring any health risks. Deveining actually had its benefits. This small opening you make on the shrimp is the best place to apply all those flavorings to reach the innermost part. The shell of the fish actually prevents the marinades from penetrating but that small cut you make on that part of the shrimp will allow all the seasonings to sink in.
It is best to grill shrimps when they are freshly bought. If you notice any bad smell, it doesn’t mean that they are not fresh enough. This is the effect of the iodine that is found with the kind of food this crustaceans feed on. For you to eliminate this smell, just soak them in a mixture of 2 tbsps of baking soda and 1 quart of water for 10 minutes to draw out the smell.
Placing shrimps on a skewer is the best way when grilling them no matter the size is. It is much easier to control and cook them this way. Placing shrimps on skewer can either be lengthwise to have a nice straight look or you can skewer it once from the top and the bottom to give it a nice looking curve. Make sure that you make enough space for each shrimp to allow it to cook evenly. Spacing them at least half an each from each other is the best.
Grilling shrimps without removing the shells will make it a little difficult to place them on a skewer but it is considered among shrimp lovers around the world that it is bad to cook the shrimp without the shell and the head. Besides, shrimps cooked with their heads on taste better than those without the head.
When grilling your shrimp, make sure that the heat is not too high. Medium heat is enough to get them grilled. Grilling them on a high heat will make it difficult to cook them evenly to be able to get them off the grill at the right time. For you to know if your grill is having the right temperature you should be able to hold your hands over the grill for at least 4 seconds whether you are using a charcoal grill or a gas grill.
Once the shrimp changes its color from the outside or as long as it no longer shows its original color, it means they are already cooked and it’s time to get them off the grill. Overcooking the shrimp will make their texture rubbery aside from losing their natural flavour.
