Have a Problem with Drugs or Alcohol? Find a Dallas Drug Rehab Program Today!
Written by Sandy Smith
Most folks do not understand why or how others become addicted to drugs or alcohol. It is often incorrectly assumed that a person who abuses these substances must lack morals, restraint, or willpower. In reality, drug addiction is a powerful and complex disease that begins in the brain and requires more than self-control to cure. In fact, most experts believe that there no cure for substance addiction and abuse. Alcoholics, for example, will remain alcoholics until the day they die. Even if they haven’t taken a sip of liquor in decades, one taste could send them spiraling out of control.
Why is this?
In short, we don’t know. Environment and family history may play a part, but there is no formula or model that can explain every addict. What we do know, however, is that drug addiction changes the way the brain works. After prolonged use, the brain begins to crave the drug, which makes it harder for addicts to stop taking it. If they try to quit, they will often experience symptoms of physical withdraw, which are different for every drug user. These symptoms occur because the brain is suffering from withdraw and it actually punishes the body for withholding the drug.
An addict who is in recovery will often sweat profusely, shake all over, lose his appetite, and generally just feel lousy until the brain gets over its addiction. Symptoms of withdraw can be experienced to varying degrees when people stop using any addictive drug, from alcohol to cigarettes to heroin. Unless an addict has a helpful and responsive support group, it is highly unlikely that he will be able to resist the messages his brain is sending him, i.e., “Get me the drug I need!”
How Dallas rehab programs can help
Few addicts can quit cold turkey without some kind of professional treatment. Even if they know what they’re doing is bad for them, it is unlikely that they will be able to stop without the help and support of their friends and family. The first step in any Dallas drug rehab program is to get the addict to admit that he needs help. With professional guidance, friends and loved ones can stage an intervention in an attempt to prevail on the addict the need for treatment. Most interventions are successful because they force the addict to confront his problem and let him know that people care about his health and future happiness.
The right Dallas drug rehab program can help lifelong addicts say goodbye to drug and alcohol and start living healthy, happy, and productive lives. With a wide range of therapeutic solutions at their disposal, Dallas rehab programs not only help patients get clean, they also help them understand why they became addicts in the first place.
