Hawksnest Bay, St. John USVI
Written by Leigh Woeller
St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands has many beautiful beaches. Although Trunk Bay gets most of the attention, Hawksnest Bay is also one not to be missed. In fact many of the locals list hawksnest bay as their favorite due to all the tourists swarming onto to Trunk Bay. Hawksnest Bay has gorgeous white sand, crystal crlear water and is an excellent snorkeling spot as well. Next trip to the Virgin Islands, be sure to add Hawksnest Bay to your “must see” list.
St. John in the US Virgin Islands is home to some of the most amazing beaches on this planet. Among the noteworthy is Hawksnest Bay. Both the locals and vacation goers list Hawksnest Bay as their favorite bay in the Virgin Islands. Pristine water, soft sugar-white sand and lovely people – what more could you possibly ask?
Just east of the world famous Mongoose Junction shopping center, Hawksnest Beach is just a few steps away from a convenient parking lot. Many locals enjoy “taking a soak” at Hawksnest Bay after work to relieve the day’s stress. Because of the bay's accessibility, it’s usually dotted with sunlovers and snorkelers, and is the best beach to go to if you enjoy mingling and getting immersed in the local culture. Because of its easy accessibility and stunning views, Hawksnest can get pretty busy – especially during a popular holiday.
Another reason for Hawksnest's popularity is the lovely sunrise. Facing the east, the beach in the early morning is a wonderful sight to behold. The water surface glimmers different shades of red, orange and amber as the early sun's rays hit. And as the sun slowly climbs over the horizon, its beauty grows even more. The only way to take a full advantage of this is to take a soak yourself and feel the embrace of the cool morning air and warm salt water.
If you're also looking for a good place to snorkel, Hawksnest does not disappoint. The reef that begins a short distance off the beach's center is a highly recommended spot. Snorkel enthusiasts suggest that you snorkel Hawksnest on days when there are no swells coming from the north that stir up water and reduce underwater visibility. Snorkel around the edge or in the middle of the bay where the depth is sufficient and feast your eyes on orange elkhorn coral, which you might mistake for a small tree rather than a colony of animals.
When visiting St. John USVI, be sure to visit and experience the beauty that is Hawksnest Bay. One of the best ways to see Hawksnest is from the water, a view that cannot be rivaled. We recommend that you choose a day boat charter, and cruise into Hawknest Bay for swimming, snorkeling and views that will leave you breathless.
