Having a massage feels great but what are the health benefits of massage?
Tension is who you think you should be. Relaxation is who you are ~ Chinese Proverb
Massages have grown massively in popularity recent years with now one third on Americans having a massage in the past year, top spa’s have a plethora of different massages on offer, there are 160 different sorts available. The most common and therefore popular are:
Swedish, Aromatherapy, Hot Stone, Deep Tissue, Shiatsu, Sports.
Health Benefits of massage.
I have at least one massage a week and have experienced many of the health benefits of massage.
Helps with postural issues caused by many of us, me included spending too long sitting at our desk . I confess to having some fun this week with the words describing the benefits of massage so I have sought when to use a selection of words, rather than just help or improve.
Mitigates bio mechanical problems caused by Repetitive Strain Injury, whether from typing or any other repetitive action. Massage reduces nerve compression which allows the nerves to function better
Promotes flexibility of our bodies, by releasing cramped and or tense muscles.
Improves circulation of the blood and of our lymph system, due to the physical manipulation
Lowers blood pressure as part of the relaxation response which happens as the massage is performed.
Eliminates stress, on many levels, massage relaxes us, improves our circulation and promotes our feeling good also the benefit of touch is hard to exaggerate.
Meliorates headaches by increasing the blood flow and the oxygen to our head, the massage also release stress points
Palliates osteoarthritis by increasing oxygen rich blood flow to our joints.
Helps us to feel good by being touched for a period of time.
Procures a great nights sleep due to all our muscles having a great work out. Increasing blood flow, reducing stress, lowering blood pressure
Eliminates toxins form our muscles and fat due to the better blood flow and increased oxygen around our bodies.
Cures back pain by releasing tight muscles, tendons and ligaments allowing them to move in the correct way for the body.
So there we have twelve great health benefits of massage. How often should we partake in the health benefits of massage, once a week I found is great for keeping your muscle tissue pliable and in amazing shape. If you have a special need your physician might recommend more often. For many it comes down to time and cost. The UK about £30 an hour seemed to be about average for a self employed qualified massage therapist, with spa’s costing about 50% more.
In the Philippines I’m spoilt for choice and the cost is much more reasonable. Every city I have been to has a selection of massage parlours offering a wide array of different types of massages. Cost, the most I’ve paid was for a combined Thai Swedish massage 90 minutes 450 pesos, so about £6.50 or $10. Heavenly.
