Help For Back Pain - When Treatment May Be Needed
Written by David M. Miller
Seeking help for back pain may appear to be the last resort when it comes to this kind of medical condition. Backaches and pains are nothing new to people who spend a lot of time sitting and hunched over their desks. It is also nothing new for medical professionals who lift and turn patients all day long. In fact, a good number of people are suffering from this kind of medical condition. However, since it is a common condition not everyone takes back pain seriously. Even when the pain is debilitating they still refuse to see a doctor because it is nothing new to them.
However, the habit of not seeking help for back pain may have its consequences. You may not know it but poor posture and poor use of proper body mechanics are just some of the causes for this medical condition, but that does not mean that there are no other causes. In fact, this medical condition can have more severe causes like compressed spinal cord, herniated discs, and even spinal stenosis. The truth is, some of these causes may need surgical intervention and failure to treat these causes may result in the worsening of your current condition.
The question now is when is the right time for you to seek help for back pain? The pain that you are experiencing may be a symptom of a more severe medical condition. However, there are also variations in the presence of this problem that will help you determine whether it is time to seek immediate help or not. It is important that you know when to see a doctor because if you fail to do so you might find yourself sitting on a wheel chair rather than walking down the street.
When should you seek help for back pain? You should set an appointment at your doctor’s clinic when you begin to experience other symptoms like unexplained weight loss, fatigue, lethargy, and even loss of consciousness. The addition of these other symptoms together with your lower back pain could be signs of a more serious medical condition. This condition can be a medical emergency or life threatening thus it is important that you get conditioon checked as soon as possible. Any delay may put your life at risk.
If you notice an increase in pain, intensity or if it wakes you up at night, then it is time to find help for back pain. The intensity may be cause by a herniated disc or spinal stenosis. It can also be caused by fractures in the spinal column. If these are left untreated, these may leave you paralyzed or immobile for some time.
You will need to seek help for back pain when the condition is caused by a recent injury to your back or to your head. If the pain is accompanied by numbness in the lower extremities and incontinence then you have no more excuse not to consult a doctor.
