Conjunctivitis is a common eye disorder affecting the conjunctiva or the transparent membrane lining the eyelid and covering the front of the eye. The primary cause of conjunctivitis is bacterial or viral attack. Bacteria often occur on eyelids which have much exposure to filthy environment; dirty surroundings. The bacteria, from eyelids, make their way to the shaft of the eye lashes and finally the conjunctiva, infecting and inflaming it. The common conjunctivitis causing bacteria are staphylococci, pnuemococci, streptococci and Chlamydia trachomatis. Conjunctivitis is highly contagious in nature and spreads easily from one person to another through direct contact.

The other causes of conjunctivitis are exposure to chemicals, exposure to allergens like pollen grains, exposure to pollutants like dust and smoke, dietetic errors, eye straining, changes in pressures in head, medical conditions like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, herpes zoster, Crohn's disease etc. Conjunctivitis is also differently named as sore eye and pink eye. The conjunctivitis affected eye turns red or pink and itches a lot. The inflamed membrane secretes greenish-yellow pus that causes the eyelids to stick to each other when one wakes up from sleep. There is much pain in the eye. The affected eye swells and the patient feels an intense burning sensation and gritty feeling in the eye. The vision turns blurred. Swelling of lymph nodes, fever, runny nose and sneezing are the other less common symptoms.
