Hypothyroidism, a common thyroid disorder, occurs when the thyroid gland is underactive and do not produce enough thyroid hormone. The low function of thyroid gland affects the metabolism rate of the body as the body’s metabolism is controlled primarily by the thyroid gland.

The Hypothyroidism is characterized by fatigue, puffy face, depression, high blood pressure, thinning of hair and sudden weight gain. Besides medications, there are some home remedies that help to some extent to manage Hypothyroidism.


Coconut oil contains medium-chain fatty acids that help raise the basal body temperature, which is necessary for the person suffering from low thyroid function. Coconut oil helps improve the functioning of the thyroid gland. This oil will also stimulate the metabolism as well as boost energy.

The use of coconut oil for cooking is beneficial in the condition of Hypothyroidism. You can even drink a glass of coconut milk mixed with two spoons of coconut oil in the morning with your breakfast every day.


Kelp is a brown seaweed which contains a high amount of iodine as well as other minerals in it. Hence, this kelp is beneficial for those suffering from hypothyroidism due to the deficiency of iodine. But this home remedy is not good for those suffering from an autoimmune thyroid disorder. So first ask your doctor before taking supplements of kelp.


Apple cider vinegar is also a great option to deal with hypothyroidism. Apple cider vinegar helps in the detoxification also. It restores acid alkaline balance and facilitates weight loss too. It helps in the regulation of hormones and improve their energy metabolism also.

You can add two spoons of apple cider vinegar in a glass of warm water. You can add a little amount of honey according to your taste. Drinking this mixture daily gives relief from the hypothyroidism.


Fish oils are another excellent option for increasing thyroid hormone uptake. Fish oils, hence helps in maintaining healthy thyroid function. Fish are the richest source of omega 3 fatty acids and hence fish oil are also a good source of omega fatty acids. They are good for boosting the immunity and helps fight inflammation.

So, At least for 15 minutes, expose your body to early morning sun rays. This home remedy is also a good option to maintain a healthy immune function and calcium metabolism.

Those who are suffering from the problem of Hypothyroidism can wake up early in the morning for taking morning sun rays as well as they can do some healthy exercises. Exercise helps to stimulate the thyroid gland.


Guggul is another great way to maintain a healthy thyroid. This home remedy is also an effective way to manage hypothyroidism. Even, most of the Ayurvedic medicines that are used to treat Hypothyroidism contains Guggul in it. Guggul is the extract that is obtained from the plant Commiphora mukul. This plant contains active compounds called guggulsterones which are helpful in stimulating the thyroid function. Also, this Guggul possess anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity and cholesterol lowering properties. You can take this herb in the form of supplement.

Hypothyroidism cannot be treated alone with this home remedies. But these home remedies can help a person to get relief to some extent from hypothyroidism.
