How a Camera Security System Protects Your Business
Written by Sam Pascucci
While a security camera can be a very important part of your business security strategy, it can't do it all. Think of camera surveillance systems as providing an extra layer of security on top of strong locks, excellent lighting, and security awareness by personnel. When security cameras are included in a company's overall strategy, they help form an interlocking net of security around the business, deterring crime, and collecting evidence that can be used when crimes are committed. With camera system prices as low as they are today, there's no reason for any business to go without cameras.
Protection Against Theft
A camera security system protects against theft. Most burglars and less-brazen robbers see a security camera and decide to find an easier target elsewhere. Surveillance systems also protect against employee theft, which can be a big problem in retail and other types of businesses. If someone wants to steal, they want to get away with it, and getting away with theft is much more difficult when there is a camera system covering an entire business. Law enforcement personnel and the media use camera stills and footage to help capture criminals, and in many cases it works.
Protection Against Vandalism
Finding that your business has been vandalized is a horrible feeling. Vandalism includes many types of criminal acts, including
* Graffiti
* Broken windows
* Arson
* Mailbox damage
* Using eggs or toilet paper to deface property
* Littering
Not only does this result in the expense and hassle of cleaning up after the vandal, it can hurt business because some people won't feel as safe visiting a business that has been defaced or damaged. Camera surveillance systems can discourage vandals, and if vandals damage the camera they believe is watching them, back-up or hidden cameras (hidden in exit signs, for example) can capture footage that can lead to arrests.
Protection Against 'Inside Jobs'
Employee crime is an unfortunate reality, particularly in some types of businesses. Medical offices may store pharmaceuticals, which can be a big temptation to unscrupulous employees. Employees stealing from cash registers or shoplifting can cost businesses big money, but security cameras can go a long way toward discouraging such activity. Footage captured on camera can be used by employers in disciplinary procedures to help keep employee crime to a minimum.
Other Benefits of Surveillance Systems
Having a camera system in place shows employees and the general public that you take the security of your business seriously. When shoppers or clients know your business is secure, they may feel more comfortable being there. Insurance companies like for businesses to have a multi-faceted security system in place too. In fact, some insurance policies offer discounts for businesses that have security cameras installed, because they are statistically associated with fewer insurance claims being filed. Neighboring businesses benefit when several businesses have camera systems, because the camera system of a neighboring establishment may capture criminal acts when a targeted business's camera is damaged or destroyed. The investment in a security camera system is small, particularly when compared to the losses that it can prevent.
