How do Solar Lights Capture Energy?

Environmental and Green LivingFebruary 16, 2011Written by Rayna Marie699 views

The energy from the sun is clean, abundant and free. The sun emits enough energy to power the whole world. Light emissions from the sun create heat and, when captured by solar paneling, is converted into an electrical current. This electrical current can be captured and used as a power source. Large crystals made from silicon can produce this current from sunlight yet it remains an expensive technological process. Solar energy is not used widely as a result of the costs involved but innovation and technology in the alte
ative energy industry is improving by the day.

Solar lights have some very basic components. The part most prominent part of the design is the solar panel. Most solar powered lights have four solar cells that are wired together sequentially. Unde
eath the solar panel is usually a rechargeable NiCad battery, a control panel and a light emitting diode (LED) bulb. The automatic function of the lights is controlled by a photocell sensor which tells the light when to switch on based on the availability of natural sunlight. The solar paneling is commonly wired to a diode and then connected to the NiCad battery. When the solar powered light is placed under the sun during the day, the solar panel collects the energy and stores it within the rechargeable batteries. The batteries then power the light through the night until they are recharged by the sun the next day.

There are many advantages to choosing solar powered lights over standard electrical landscape lights. Solar lights cost absolutely nothing to operate so there is no effect on the carbon footprint of the property. Solar lights are moveable and can be relocated to suit the landscape and availability of sunlight. Solar lights create a magical atmosphere in a garden when placed amongst the flora. A darkened area of a garden can instantly become a charming feature with the glow from some strategically placed solar lights.

With the unrelenting pressures on the Earth's natural environment, solar landscape lights are becoming the ethical design choice for homeowners today. Today's solar light designs retain the beauty of modern lighting without the running costs. They are designed with the preservation of Earth in mind so there is no stress on the environment. The demand and appreciation for solar energy will only increase in the future as the global community awakens to the need for sustainable solutions.
