How does becoming emotionally attached to ideas, people, or things generally affect an individuals long term quality of life and/or happiness?
Written by Dada Bhagwan
All of us are emotionally attached to some ideas, some people and some things in this worldly life, aren't we? The reason why we are attached to these is because we experience a sense of comfort, ease and happiness with them. So far, so good!
But how does our emotional attachment towards them affect our life and / or our happiness, let’s understand that today…
1. First and foremost, this emotional attachment does not lead to liberation, rather it creates a bondage.
2. Secondly, the emotional attachment inevitably leads to suffering. As much attachment, that much is the suffering! It’s because where there’s attachment, there’s bound to be expectations too. And when expectations are not fulfilled, it leads to suffering, enormous suffering.
So what is the way out now? Do we renounce the ideas, people and things we are deeply attached to and move away from them or we continue with our attachment and allow our life and happiness to be affected? What is the right path forward?
The Enlightened One explains:
If we are unattached with everybody, then there will not be any expectations; no hatred, no attachment, then we have love with everybody, pure love. No attachment is called Absolute stage! It means full of bliss, full of love. The presence of that person is also helpful for everybody. Everybody will feel love for that person. So, it is the goal of human life. Because due to ignorance, we have attachment.
When we have attachment with somebody, then we have expectations from that person. And when the expectations are not fulfilled, reaction will come. Hatred will be there, abhorrence will be there. So, attachment and hatred is reactionary. So when we come out of attachment and hatred and everything, so nobody will feel hurt by us, everybody will feel happiness and love.
Due to ignorance, this all attachment and hatred is there. And when we get Self-Realization, so automatically all attachment will dissolve and love will be there, pure love. In pure love, there is no expectation, one never sees faults of each other, there’s no condition, no blaming on each other, just love, pure love!
The attachment and hatred that happens towards people, we want to bring in equanimity there. So, we have to release or leave our attachment and hatred towards those people, we do not have to leave our people that we are attached to or move out from our relationships. When we get suffering, then we come to know that, ‘I have expectations. And since my expectations are not being fulfilled, I am getting this suffering.’ So, from our suffering, we are able to know about our attachment.
And once we dissolve this attachment with the use of knowledge of Self (Self-Realization), then we will not have any suffering while dealing with that person, the interaction will be with love, with pure love!

How common is self-love, what happens without it, and how does it relate to self-esteem?
Self-love is very essential in boosting our self-esteem. A person having self-love is contented with his own presence, whereas a person who does not have self-love always wanders to get love from other people or things. He is always restless. He never feels satisfied even after receiving love from people. His hunger for love never ceases, and hence he demands more and more attention from others. As a result, his relationships are ruined and he always lives in misery.rn rnSo,

What is the importance of Living Guru?
Questioner: If we surrender to the great souls that lived thousands of years ago, can that be considered surrender? Can we make any progress through such surrender or do we need to surrender to a living great man? Dadashri: You can progress even through Paroksha (indirectly- one not currently living). However if you find such a living (Pratyaksh) person, then your liberation will be instant. The indirect approach will give you the benefit of progress but there is no liberatio
