Scientists have spent years researching treatments for acne, and now have found solutions that get rid of acne quickly and easily. Medications that are used to treat acne usually contain one or more of these active ingredients: salicylic acid, sulfur, resorcinol and benzoyl peroxide. While some of these medications can be bought over the counter, some require a prescription. When using an over the counter treatment the individual adjusts the dosage of that product according to their needs. A highly effective prescription medication is Accutane, although it does have some serious side effects, including depression and suicidal tendencies. Over the counter treatments that are based on benzoyl peroxide, and need to be used one to two times a day in order to get rid of acne. Over the counter treatments based on sulfur and resorcinol will irritate the skin and cause decongestion of the sebaceous glands.

In order to choose the right treatment to get rid of acne, it must be understood that some treatments are meant only to treat mild to moderate forms of acne. For those suffering from severe forms of acne, and scaring, will have surgical removal recommended as a treatment method. Laser and photodynamic treatments can be very effective for these cases, when other treatments are unsuccessful.

Personal hygiene should be considered a very important factor when treating acne, as well as preventing future out breaks. When pimples appear they should not be broken, or have pressure applied to them, as this can spread the bacteria and risk more scars.

To get rid of acne diet must be altered as well. It is important to increase Omega-3 intake, and reduce Omega-6, so these two elements are balanced. Hydrogenated fast should be avoided as much as possible as well, as it has been reported to cause acne to get worse.
