Definition...
A subliminal message by definition is, a signal or message designed to pass below the normal limits of ones perception. For example it might be inaudible to the conscious mind (but audible to the subconscious mind) or might be an image transmitted very briefly and unperceived on a conscious level yet perceived on a subconscious level. Subliminal messages are messages in the form of written and spoken words and images or pictures. Subliminal comes from the Latin word "sub" meaning under and "limen" which means threshold.

How Subliminal Messages Work...
Subliminal messages can work on a visual and auditory level. Subliminals in film for instance would involve messages flashing up on the screen for a fraction of a second. To give you an idea, a typical frame rate for film would be 30 frames per second, so the subliminal words or pictures would be imprinted on one or two of these individual frames, meaning that the subliminal would be flashed on screen for as little as one 30th or one 15th of a second. The general method for creating audio subliminal messages involves recording words or affirmations and then raising the frequency to make them inaudible to the human ear, though the actual words are still very much there.

I have been experimenting with subliminal messages for many years now. In one such experiment I made a recording of my voice where I was calling my dogs name "Bertie". I then raised the frequency of the recording, Put the dog in another room, and when I played it back the dog came running in and looked at me as if to say "yes, you called". I had some fun with this and tried it a few times over, and yes, it worked every time. This made sense as a dog hears sounds far outside of the range that a human is capable of hearing, hence dog whistles that are inaudible to us but loud and clear to the dog.

Our eyes have over 100.000 receptors and our ears have over 20.000 yet we only use a small fraction of these at any given time. The fact is, your subconscious mind soaks up every detail like a sponge and the subliminal messages within the audio or visual that you are watching or listening to will be embedded in your subconscious. With repetition these subliminals can certainly wash away negative belief patterns that one might have and replace them with positive ones.

Controversy...
Subliminal Messages were first introduced in 1897, but it wasn’t until the 1950’s that subliminal recording became a controversial issue. You may have heard or read about how advertising companies have been known to make use of flashing split second messages in film and video commercials to subconsciously entice us into buying their products. The James Vicary “Eat Popcorn and Drink Coke” Study in the 1950′s caused many people to become more familiar with this concept, and after the results of the study were released, we found that 41% of people had heard of subliminal advertising and had a basic knowledge of how subliminal messages work. By the 1980′s more than 80% of people claimed to have some awareness of the term and about 70% of those people believed it to be an effective tool used by advertising companies. According to the study, in the 1950's, in a movie theatre in New Jersey, James Vicary (a social psychologist and advertising expert) carried out six weeks of study. The study involved testing a secret device on thousands upon thousands of unsuspecting people watching the movies. This device flashed the messages “Eat Popcorn” and “Drink Coke” for a fraction of a second every five seconds whilst the movie played. James Vicary claimed that after the messages were flashed there was an increase of sales in popcorn by 58% and an increase in sales of Coke by 18%.

The Reality of Subliminal Messages...
Today, subliminal messaging is a powerful method of self development. Individuals have realized its ability to program their minds directly, and gurus such as Anthony Robbins, Tiger Woods and Derren Brown have done a lot to promote its effectiveness. The truth is, the sky is the limit when it comes to using subliminal techniques to improve your life. There is a huge number of people that have used subliminal messages to attract success quickly, and managed to sustain that success in the long term. This speaks volumes for how useful these techniques can actually be. If you are looking for a way to feel better about yourself, achieve a specific personal goal or even gain a little confidence then subliminal messages could really help you.
