How to Attract the Best Employees in the Country by Offering Employee Relocation Benefits
Written by Lindsey Allen
In the world of business, employees serve as the face and backbone of their respective companies. Just as businesses compete for consumer dollars, they must also compete for qualified job applicants. Businesses that consistently fail to offer competitive employment benefits are consistently pushing away qualified job applicants into the open arms of the competition. If customers fuel businesses with their cash, then employees fuel businesses with their actions, skills, and experiences. Even when employees do not deal directly with consumers, the actions of each and every employee can directly impact the quality of the product or service which a company provides, making the quest for quality employees all the more important.
One way to attract quality employees is to increase the geographic size of the area from where applicants are pooled. Companies that only invite job applicants from the immediate local area are missing out on the talent that exists in other cities, counties, and states around the country. When the talent pool is geographically limited, companies will often find themselves having to settle for job applicants who lack many or all of the traits which the company was originally looking for when they announced their job vacancy. Settling for an employee who is “good enough” forces businesses to accept a level of work from the employee that will undoubtedly also become known as “good enough”.
Finding quality applicants to fill a job vacancy requires more than a few long distance job announcements, companies must also be able to compete for new employees by offering attractive benefits, like relocation assistance. Vacancies for high paying jobs mean nothing to qualified individuals who are both geographically separated from the job announcement and lack the funds to uproot their entire family before a paycheck is earned. A benefit like relocation assistance will sometimes mean the difference between an applicant accepting an offer for employment and moving on to another company. In extremely competitive and technical job markets, businesses simply can’t afford to lose qualified employees to their competitors. With each employee or prospective employee lost to the competition, businesses also abandon the contributions and profits which those highly qualified employees could have made.
The best part about offering employee relocation benefits is that they are beneficial to both employer and employee alike. Employers have the benefit of being able to hire only the best of the best, and employees are able to pursue a great job with a company that shows it cares about its employees. Depending on where the job is located, prospective employees can also be enticed by a benefit like employee relocation assistance coupled with regional benefits like better schools, lower property taxes, or better year-round weather.
