How to Become a Postal Service Mail Carrier

Mail carriers work on foot or using the company vehicle to deliver heavy loads of mail or carrying a satchel. Postal service mail carriers have to be eighteen years old or older, U.S. citizens or have a permanent resident-alien card. Males have to be registered with selective service after turning eighteen.

Prospective applicants are required to pass a written examination to see how quickly they can check names, numbers, addresses and memory skills. You must have a clean crimminal history free of any criminal charges or crimes. A safe driving record is also required for mail carriers who wish to drive and deliver mail. Applicants who wish to drive are required to take a training course and must receive a passing grade to proceed. Advancement and promotions occur due to seniority - the longer you have worked, the more pay, benefits and vacations you will receive.
