To be successful in a freelance writing career, it’s important to know how to create your marketing plan and then work it to promote your services. After you’ve been in business for a while, marketing your freelance writing business may be second nature. When you’re just starting out, however marketing your business may mean the difference between success and failure.

What does a marketing plan do for you? It helps you decide what activities you can do each day to bring more clients to your business. It can be as simple as scheduling time to cold call potential clients for a specific amount of time each day, or it can be an in-depth plan describing who your target market is, how you will approach obtaining new clients, and more. The decision of what your marketing plan will include is entirely up to you.

It is a good idea to consider who you’re going to market your writing skills to and who is most likely to hire you. Do they have a brick and mortar business or do they do business entirely online? The more detailed you can be when envisioning your target market, the better chance you’ll have of using the right method to reach them effectively.

Do you know how your services or products will meet your target markets’ needs? How will you explain to them why they need what you have to offer? Take time before getting your business off the ground to do some research. Talk to people who are in your intended market. What needs do they have that haven’t been met?

What marketing tools will you use to reach your target market? Will you reach them by print advertising or online advertising? Decide what tools you’ll use to get your business in front of your market and do so in a way they’ll want to respond.

Finally, write down who your target market is, how your business will meet the needs of your intended market, and how you’re going to position yourself to stand out from other freelance writing businesses. Think of how you’ll create a brand for yourself and your business that will draw potential clients.

When you’ve taken the time to determine your target market and the best possible way to approach them through marketing, you’ll have a better opportunity to do more than work enough to pay the bills. You’ll be able to position yourself to soar once you know how to create your marketing plan and then put it into practice.
