For many women having perfect long nails would a dream come true. The problem many women suffer from however is brittle nails. Luckily it is a lot easier to deal with than you may think and getting them in top condition.

How to Prevent and Treat Brittle Nails

Nail Polish Removers - For those of you who like to paint your nails be very careful about what nail polish remover you buy. Look at the ingredient list and avoid ones which have acetone. Choose a polish remover with acetate in it instead.

Water - If you prefer to drink coffee and cola instead of water then now is the time to quit those bad habits. Dehydration may be playing a big factor in your brittle nails so drinking plenty of water may help. Also rub moisturizer or olive oil on your nails.

Thyroid – Brittle nails can be an indicator of other health problems such as hypothyroidism. Have a look to see if you have any other symptoms of hypothyroidism and consult your doctor for further advice.

Calcium - Nails, like bones, need calcium to be strong and healthy. Include more foods in your diet that contain calcium such as dairy products and broccoli.

Biotin – Originally it was found that biotin (a type of B vitamin) strengthened horses' hooves. So when humans took it the result was stronger nails. If you have particularly brittle nails then taking 2.5 mg per day in the form of a supplement will help.

Protein – Protein is made up of amino acids which are said to be the "building blocks" of our body. They are absolutely essential to our health because they create our cells and repair tissues. Not only will they reward you with strong nails but a healthy body in general.

Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) – EFAs are just that; essential. Most diets these days contain too much saturated fat and not enough EFAs. By taking Evening Primrose Oil and Fish Oil you'll be able to help eliminate your brittle nails plus have smooth skin and shiny healthy hair.

Brittle nails are often caused by poor nutrition which means you are likely to be short on nutrients such as zinc, iron, vitami
A, vitami
E and selenium. Take this as a warning sign that you need to improve your diet by eating more salads, EFAs and drink more water. If you have other health problems consult your doctor for further advice.
