How to Detect Carbon Monoxide in Your Home
Written by Tiffany Renee
There are many issues that can occur in the home but one of the most notorious is for a buildup of carbon monoxide to take place. This poisonous gas can be fatal to people to breathe it, especially if it is built up to large levels. The unfortunate thing is, although this gas is fatal, it cannot be detected by sight or smell. In fact, carbon monoxide can become a problem in the home without you ever knowing that it is an issue, unless you know how to detect it in advance. Here are a few tips that can help you in detecting a carbon monoxide buildup in the home.
One of the most important things for you to consider when you are a homeowner is that everything within the home must be functioning properly. There are many different sources that are in the home which could lead to a buildup of carbon monoxide if they are not operating properly. These include generators, gas ranges, kerosene heaters, furnace systems, fireplaces, space heaters and appliances that are fueled by natural gas. You may even have a buildup of carbon monoxide poisoning in the home due to somebody smoking cigarettes or a pipe in the house. If you suspect that any problems are occurring with those appliances, make sure that you have them looked into by a professional immediately.
It is also a good idea to have carbon monoxide detectors placed in the home at key locations. These include near the bedrooms, as you want to be able to detect the problem, even while you are sleeping. Most people are very conscious about having smoke detectors in their home but it is just as important have a carbon monoxide detector for the health of your family.
Be cautious and quick to act if you experience any symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. Those symptoms can include dizziness, nausea, headaches, fatigue, depression, agitation, drowsiness, seizures, confusion and shortness of breath. If you experience any of those difficulties, it is best if you contact your physician or emergency medical personnel. You can also move to an area where there is some fresh air, just in case there is an issue.
Finally, make sure that everyone in your home is well educated on the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning and on how to detect if there are any problems in the home. Make sure that they are also aware of the possibility that there will be no indication that there is an issue, so the carbon monoxide detectors should be used and respected.
Even though there are many problems that can occur within the home, carbon monoxide poisoning is one that should always be considered. Take appropriate steps to ensure that a buildup of carbon monoxide is not occurring as a result of anything that you are doing, such as burning a fireplace with the flue closed or running the car in the garage for an extended amount of time. If any issues arise in the home or if you suspect a problem with carbon monoxide buildup, seek help immediately for the problem.
