Long-distance relationships are not easy, but this doesn’t mean that they are not worthwhile. In fact, if you are considering not getting into a long-distance relationship because you think it will be too difficult, don’t say “no” without giving it a lot of consideration. You could be giving up a relationship with a potential soulmate, just because you are afraid of a bit of work. The biggest thing to get over is insecurity. Trust is important in any relationship, but it is even more important in a long-distance relationship. If you are interested in someone who lives in another city, or even in another part of the world, here are a few tips on how to make the relationship work.

  • Work on Your Insecurities – One of the biggest hurdles to overcome when you are in a long-distance relationship is insecurities. You are not right there with the person you are involved with, and you may wonder if they are really where they say they are, with who they say they are with, etc. If you are going to be in a long-distance relationship, you need to work on your insecurities and learn to trust more.
  • Make Each Moment Count – There are going to be times when you can get together in person, and when you do, you need to make each moment count. In fact, you need to make every moment of your relationship count, whether you are physically together or talking over a long-distance. Take time for the little things. Write them a love note when you are apart, hold hands when you are together. Just do whatever you can to enjoy each other.
  • Talk Every Day – Just because you can’t see each other every day, it doesn’t mean that you can’t talk and enjoy each other’s company. It is important to keep the line of communication open, and you need to be able to talk to each other every day. Chatting online is okay, but you should make it a point to actually talk over the telephone, so you can listen to each other’s voices. Even if you can’t talk for hours, it is important to squeeze in a few minutes each day.
  • Start Using Skype – The next best thing to being together in person is to be able to talk face to face online. You can do this with Skype, but you need to make sure that you have the right technology. You may have to sell laptop equipment that you currently have in order to have the money to upgrade to a newer model that is better equipped to handle video chats. The benefits are twofold: you get to talk face to face, and you get a new laptop.
  • Set Aside a Special Time – Even though you talk to each other every day, make sure that you always set aside a special time each week that you can devote to each other, such as a Sunday afternoon, Friday night, etc. You can chat online, talk on the telephone, etc. Don’t make other plans for this time each week. It is like a standing date night, only you are doing it over a distance instead of being together in the same place.
  • Be Honest about Your Emotions – There are going to be times when you are not happy being so far away from the one that you love. Don’t hide your emotions. If you are sad about this, or if anything else is bothering you, be open about your feelings. You need to be able to understand how each other feels about everything, but if you are keeping those feelings to yourself, your relationship is never going to properly blossom.
