Unlimited broadband availability has become a contentious issue in the recent times. People who want to download large files demand unlimited broadband. They are prepared to choose appropriate packages and to subscribe the prescribed amounts to the internet service providers. But despite paying such amounts and concluding contracts with the service providers, they are not provided with uninterrupted supply of broadband. The service providers maintain that the term ‘unlimited broadband’ does not mean uninterrupted supply. The subscribers have to understand the terms and conditions applicable to them under the contract. The contract in respect of broadband connectivity implies that the usage is subjected to certain restrictions.
Internet service providers have many packages specially tailored to suit the diverse requirements of the consumers. But many agencies fail to offer efficient services to the subscribers. It is often alleged that the service providers are chocking the supplies when certain limits stipulated by them are exceeded by the consumers. Those who download large volumes of data are subjected to restrictions despite their options for
unlimited broadband. At times they are forced to pay additional charges for consuming excess bandwidth. Contracts with some consumers were terminated by the agencies for repeatedly exceeding the prescribed limits of usage. Plethora of complaints are being made to Of COM by the consumers concerned against such unilateral actions by the service providers. According to them the agencies reduce the speed and restrict the quantum of downloads violating the contracts. Consumers also point out that the term ‘excess usage’ of bandwidth is not clearly defined or explained by the agencies.
Of COM, the monitoring agency is closely watching the situation and making efforts to streamline the system. In the meanwhile the Government is also contemplating extensive reforms in the distribution of bandwidth and to enhance the efficiency of the system. There are service providers who are able to meet the demands of the consumers. But their services are available only in certain localities. The broadband comparison services have enumerated such broadband suppliers for the guidance of the consumers. One of the recent reviews point out that BE and O2 are the best options for those who want unlimited broadband. SKY is also able to provide unlimited supplies as required by the consumers.
Indications are that the overall situation in UK is improving much to the relief of the consumers. However in coverage, quantum and speed UK system has to achieve much more if it wants to be on par with some European countries. This is more relevant in the case of speed of the broadband. Even though the consumers in UK are availing the most economic deals, when comparing with the rates prevailing in the European continent, the system cannot claim to be best in the region.
