The hours of light are relative because the mushrooms generally grow in the forest surrounded by tall trees and thick foliage, so they spend a good part of their life in the dark.

If you grow them in sunlight, just leave the shutters open and put the mushrooms near the wall of the window but on the side to make sure they never have direct light. If you grow with lamps, look for the ideal position so that they do not receive it directly.


Moisture is also an essential component because it is what activates the mycelium from which the fungi will eventually be born. To provide the necessary humidity, cultivate in a propagator and hydrate the bread with osmosis or bottled water but never with tap water.

By adding water, the bread will start to swell and you will then have to continue adding water as it goes so that it absorbs and soaks well. Once the bread is hydrated, empty the excess water because if it remains at the base, it will cause rot.

You will receive your bread with a bag that will serve as a greenhouse but if you want to get the best results, you will need a propagator. To activate the mycelium, keep the humidity around 90% for the first 2 days by adding water to the base of your greenhouse (also osmosed or bottled).

Another way to keep humidity at this level is to leave the Tupperware lid closed. After the first 2 days, lower the humidity to 70%. This is not too complicated because it is enough to play with the windows of your greenhouse until you get the desired rate.


The temperature is also very important since the mushrooms are cultivated between 21 ° C and 24 ° C. So keep this temperature range if you want to harvest as much as possible.

If you live in a fairly cool area or want to grow them in a greenhouse, you can use a heated propagator or add a thermal blanket underneath. If you cultivate them at a temperature below 21 ° C, the mushrooms will develop more slowly and will, therefore, offer a lower production because of these bread count with a limited lifespan once the mycelium is activated.


The last factor to take into account is hygiene because mushrooms are very sensitive species, so you will need to keep their habitat completely clean and sterilized.

Never touch bread or mushrooms directly with your hands, always use latex gloves and if possible a mask. Likewise, never alter their environment by smoking or spraying any type of product or deodorant in the room where they are, as this could be fatal for fungi.

After 3-4 days, they will be ready to be harvested, you will only have to let them dry for a few days before you can finally taste them.

To remove the mushrooms, simply put on gloves and take them with your fingers, pulling on them slightly and applying a slight rotation. You will find that they will not offer much resistance. Mushrooms are very sensitive and the point where you took them will turn black in just a few hours. This reaction is normal and there is, therefore, no need to worry about their edibility.

Even if you leave the bread without the fungus, the mycelium will still be active for a while (which will vary depending on the conditions provided), which can generate new shoots a few days later. If you have taken good care of it, you can then have up to 3 or 4 good harvests, which is very productive and ultimately inexpensive.
