Providing help to a family member or loved one who is struggling with illness can be an especially difficult task for anyone, no matter their experience or relationship with the ill person. People are left with many different questions when it comes to the approach they should take towards caring for their loved ones in addition to how they can meet their own needs at the same time when circumstances are especially trying. Despite these valid concerns, there are some effective strategies that people can use when caring for a person struggling with serious illness. Empathy is Central The first step a caretaker must take is to do their best to try and understand the feelings that a sick person is experiencing. Your main role as a loved one is to be empathetic, in addition to providing a safe space where they can voice their emotions and feelings concerning the illness and their future. It is important to let the person know that you will be there to hear them and support them no matter what kind of challenges illness may present in the future. A care specialist from Cornerstone Hospice and Palliative Care says these actions communicate acceptance and caring at a time when a loved one is likely feeling vulnerable. Finding the Right Words Most people find that saying “the right thing” is terribly difficult when consoling a sick loved one. It is important to understand that every situation is different, and there really is no right or wrong answer in these situations. Instead, focus your efforts on simply being available for communication and emotional interchanges. Many times, patients will worry that friends and family will no longer treat them as equals, due to the debilitating nature of their illness. Your Presence is Needed Family and friends of those suffering from illness need to understand their role in preventing the person from experiencing isolation. Friendship and emotional support tends to remind ill people that they have not changed as a person and have no real reason to isolate themselves from the people whom they love. The Little Things Matter Small gestures can make a really big difference overall. Continue to show the loved one the same respect that you showed them prior to the illness. It is also important to follow their lead as they adapt to the circumstances of the illness. While it can be very helpful to anticipate their needs, it is also important to ask them what kind of help they need as they move forward. Over time, your presence as one who cares will emerge as the most important thing.
