How to Pick the Right Corporate Training Course (Without Wasting the Budget)

We run corporate training at Future Savvy (futuresavvy.co.uk), and the pattern we see most often is that training gets bought as a category ("Excel", "leadership", "Power BI") rather than as a fix for a specific problem. That mismatch is avoidable if you ask four questions before you book anything.

1. What will people actually do differently on Monday morning?

If you can't name the task, report, or decision that will change, the course is being bought for the wrong reason. "Improve Excel skills" is not an outcome. "Build the weekly sales report without emailing IT for a VLOOKUP fix" is.

2. What is the actual skill gap, not the assumed one?

We still get asked for beginner Excel courses for teams who are already comfortable with formulas but have never touched Power Query or PivotTables. A five-minute skills audit (even just three sample tasks people attempt live) tells you more than a job title does.

3. Is this a tool problem or a process problem?

Sometimes the tool is fine and the process around it is the actual issue: no shared template, no naming convention, three versions of the same spreadsheet emailed around. Training can't fix a process gap, and sending people on a course to solve one just delays the real fix.

4. How will you check it worked?

Pick one measurable thing before the course starts: report turnaround time, number of manual re-keying errors, hours spent on a recurring task. Measure it again a month after training. If nobody can point to a before/after number, the training bought goodwill, not capability.

None of this requires a big procurement process. It's a 20-minute conversation with whoever holds the budget before you pick a supplier or a syllabus. It's also, frankly, the conversation we have with every new client before we scope a course, because a well-matched half-day session beats a mismatched two-day one every time.
