You have found someone online that fits your profile exactly. Your interests match and you have ticked the same boxes. Suddenly online dating seems like the most perfect solution in the world and you can’t wait to meet them. Then you are panicking that they might not be as good in the flesh, or the person they say they are, or even worse, that you just don’t get on. Here are some tips to make the most of your first meeting and decide whether there is something there.

Really importantly, remember that first impressions aren't everything. A guy who comes across as arrogant and aloof may just be nervous. A lavishly dressed guy flashing his credit card may just be trying to impress you and really works in Sainsbury’s. There is no telling who that person really is until you give them a fair chance. Don’t dismiss them as soon as you sit down if they don’t kiss you on the cheek or say ‘hello’ exuberantly enough. The more open-minded you are, the more likely they will feel comfortable enough to be themselves around you and the better idea you will be able to get of their personality.

It is best to be coy and not give too much away before you are sure that the guy you have met is on your wavelength. Look out for vast differences to profiles, evasive answers to your questions and make sure you have told someone where you are. If you haven’t got a good vibe from the person you have met, don’t be afraid to trust your instincts.
