How to Spot a Bad Web Design?
Written by Steve Willis
The internet is a world where everything happens in absentia; meaning that there are no face to face talks, only virtual communication. That means that if birds could write, you could be communicating with a bird for all you know. What this also means is that when it comes to choosing a web design for your website, it is not a casual business. When visitors visit your website, you’ll not be there to explain why this or that page looks clumsy. Therefore, getting it right the first time is very important.
To get it right, you may have to work with a website developer and designer who’ll do a good job of getting it right the first time. However, it is your website so your first comments are very important and taken into account. This also means that any website owner or website designer should know a thing or two about what makes a good website design. It is important that your website conveys the message that you want to communicate without overwhelming the visitors. There are a couple of things that you can consider to tell that there is something wrong with the look of a website.
Except if you are creating a web design for the visually impaired, using very large fonts is normally an insult to the reader.
While using large fonts is not encouraged, neither are small fonts. You are too loud by using large fonts but you are not too quiet with small fonts. Normal font sizes are good enough. They will close your website immediately if it strains their eyes.
Music is good to the soul but it not necessarily good for a web page. Unless you run an Internet media house, music on every single page is tiring. Use technology wisely and appropriately.
Watch out for the colour scheme. Any choice of colour should complement the message that is being conveyed through the website and should not distract users from enjoying the site.
Layouts are great to use but may dampen the experience if used wrongly.
Pop-up windows are very annoying especially for visitors who’re in a hurry and trying to get important information from your website.
After taking note of all those things that are sure to annoy web users, it is also important to take heed of the fact that there are other devices to view web pages other than personal computers. This requires the need for responsive web designing. Make sure that people can conveniently see your website through laptops, mobile phones and iPads without any hindrance. Technology is changing every day, and a good web designing process is proactive enough to be able to accommodate these changes.
For those wishing to get a good web design at a good price, freelancing sites are good to find a suitable deal. There are many good designers looking for job and rates are also competitive. However, be aware of the risk of getting conned by scammers and take all necessary measures to avoid this.
