An affiliate is a person or an entity that acts as a subsidiary or extension of a larger organization or enterprise and is involved in the sales of products as well as services on behalf of the parent organization. An affiliate is paid in the form of sales commissions and referral fee based on the number of referrals. In this way, an affiliate acts as a facilitator to the business activities of the parent organization and is paid in direct proportion to the business generated for the parent firm.

Internet affiliate is one of the hottest emerging segments in the affiliate business. Deciding to become an affiliate of a firm is the first step towards entering this business segment. The parent firm must be chosen with great care because the subsequent sales of products and services undertaken by an affiliate depend on the strength of the brand name and the perception of the parent firm in the minds of the consumers. Although the margins or commissions may be low but choosing an established brand name makes the work of an affiliate a lot easier and generates much more sales volumes in comparison to a relatively unknown company with an unfamiliar brand name. While gong for purchase, consumers look for comfort in reliability that is provided to them by an established brand name.

After the parent firm has been chosen, the affiliate can decide on the medium of business. It can be a home-based affiliate business or an Internet based affiliate business. A home-based affiliate involves meeting with the potential customers and promoting the products and services of the parent firm amongst them. It requires active participation on the part of an affiliate. An Internet based affiliate business on the other hand does not require an affiliate to physically meet each and every potential customer. It involves providing ample space to the products and services under promotion on his website or web page where they are visible to the potential customers amongst the site visitors tracked using the number of hits. Compared to home-based affiliate business, this is a passive approach that does not require any active participation from the affiliate in terms of subscribing new customers. The onus of subscription lies on the customers themselves.

After the medium of business has been chosen, an affiliate has to ensure that the products and services under promotion program are visible and easily accessible to the maximum number of potential customers and that the subscription mechanism is easy enough so as to ensure conversion of any interest on the part of a customer into an assured sale. All these activities require an active participation by the affiliate and a constant monitoring of the business process and comparisons with the established benchmarks to evaluate the results. Thus we see that an affiliate business is very easy to start and requires minimal investments both in terms of money as well as time on the part of an affiliate. An affiliate acts as a conduit between a company and its customers. Due to the no frills nature of an affiliate business, it is one of the most popular businesses undertaken by people who have good salesmanship qualities but lack the resources to start their own ventures. It also provides a good learning experience in terms of exposure to the various aspects of running a business.
