This disease is mainly found in foreigners (Originated in foreign countries –“firanga desha”) thus named as Firanga roga in Ayurveda and it is also termed as “Gandh Roga”. It is mainly caused due to multiple sexual partners.
It is of three types:
Bahya (External): It comprises of burning sensation, less pain and ulcer formation.
Abhyantar (Internal): Pain in joints, Pain seems like rheumatoid arthritis and inflammation.
Both: Consists of symptoms of both external as well as internal syphilis.
As Per Ayurveda Aspect:
According to Ayurveda, this condition is referred to as “firanga roga”.
This disease has been classified as bahya (exterior), abhyantar (interior) and bahya bhyantar (both) as per the symptoms and its complications. It is caused due to the vitiation of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha dosha but the most dominating is the Kapha dosha due to which the dhatus (body tissues) gets intoxicated and causes syphilis.
Congenital syphilis is referred to as “Sahaj vikaar” as this disease is caused during the stage of fetal development or at birth.
As Per Modern Aspect:
Congenital syphilis is a severe, disabling, life-threatening and multisystem infection seen in infants that are caused by Treponema Pallidum and is transmitted to the fetus via the placenta. Pregnant women who have syphilis can spread the disease through the placenta to the unborn child.
What are the Causes of Congenital Syphilis?
Congenital syphilis is caused due to the bacteria Treponema pallidum, which is passed from mother to child during the stage of fetal development or at birth thus, children are prone to affect with congenital syphilis when they are in the womb and die shortly before or after birth. However, the high risk of transmission of infection to the fetus is in the third trimester of pregnancy. Adverse pregnancy outcomes due to the untreated maternal syphilis include stillbirth, miscarriage, prenatal death, and congenital syphilis.
What are the Symptoms of Congenital Syphilis?
Most of the patients are asymptomatic and the infection usually remains silent throughout their lifetime.
Early Congenital Syphilis:It commonly manifests during the first 3 months of an infant’s life. Manifestations include blisters, copper-colored rashes on the palms and soles and lesions around the nose and mouth as well as in the groin region. Generalized lymphadenopathy and hepatosplenomegaly may often occur. The infants may fail to thrive and have a characteristic of blood-stained nasal discharge that causes snuffles. A few infants develop meningitis, hydrocephalus, seizures, and others may be intellectually disabled.
Late Congenital Syphilis: This condition typically manifests after the 2 years of life and causes gummatous ulcers that involve the nose, nasal septum, a hard palate that results in the bossing of the frontal and parietal bones. Osteoperiostitis of the tibia leads to “Saber shins” in patients who are suffering from congenital syphilis.
