How to turn your passion into a business
Written by Maureen Gharrity
I know many people are still out of a job. For various reasons, sometimes it’s poor performance and more often, it is due to job elimination or downsizing. I think it’s hardest when this is beyond our control. We work as hard as we can, for as long as we can, sacrificing other things for the job and the company, only to be let go. The economy is starting to pick up and companies are hiring more but, the unemployment rate is still not budging. What does that mean to real people like you and me?
It means we need to get creative. We set out trying to find the perfect job and when that doesn’t work, we broaden our focus and look for any job. Any job that you might be qualified for and when that is not successful you broaden your scope again and look for any job. There are other ways to broaden your search, such as income level. You might start out looking for a certain salary, and over time and with lack of options, that limit gets lowered. You might start out with a hope for a full time job, only to adjust that focus to part time and more than one part time job to boot.
I know this can be frustrating. I’ve heard of people sending out 100s of resumes. I’ve heard of people avoiding entry level positions.
Things are getting down to the wire and still your options are limited. So what are some of the creative ways to solve this problem, even crisis?
Why not take your passion, that thing you love to do all day long, and you would do it for free and turn it into a business.
I know what you might be thinking. Self doubt comes in, that would be a lot of work. You’re right it would, but so is looking for a job, and that hasn’t been working. You got used to that job you had for a long time, with it came perks, flexibility, steady income, routine. I get it. and I can help.
Now you need a boost, a surge, or for some you might need a lifeline. Your own business can be just that.
Many people take that small idea and turn it into a big success. Look at Facebook, Windows, the list goes on.
I have worked with clients, who had this grand idea, of a business they wanted to start. Yes, sitting around a table in a restaurant, discussing this idea. I worked with her over a period of time and this business idea took off. They have paying clients, a handful of interns or other assistant, a YouTube channel, been featured in national magazines, sat on a National Panel and made over $10,000 in one month.
Here are some ideas and things you can do to get started.
How to turn that idea in to a business!!
Answer the question - What is it you really love to do? Or what is it you really want to do? You have to know what your passion is and it is important to try to be clear.
Research – spend some time doing some research on who your market would be, how you would reach them and what kind of competition there is. Maybe you know someone who is already doing what you want to do. Talk to them.
Start talking about it to trusted friends and professionals. You want to get some opinions from people you would respect hearing from. Perhaps from people who have already done what you are setting out to do, or perhaps there is an expert you know of who could give you some guidance.
It is easy to start a business, and more businesses were started in 2009 and 2010 than at any other time. There are unlimited opportunities and possibilities. That hobby you have, that has gotten rave reviews, you’d like to turn into a business, like making jewelry and you’d like to go get it out there.
