The tanning bed was invented by Fredrich Wolff in the 1970s and tanning salons soon became a rage as early as in 1985. Tanning beds still remain popular today because of many reasons. The number one reason is people think tanning makes them look more attractive and slimmer. People also like to get a healthy tan prior to going on a summer vacation. Of course, body builders also like to get their bodies tanned before entering major competitions. Besides these reasons, tanning is also used as a therapy to put an end to some seasonal depression. Whatever your reasons are for getting a tan; when you head to a sunless tanning studio, be sure to tell the attendant clearly what sort of tanning you want. Depending on your target tanned color and the color of your existing skin, you will be told which tanning lotion you will have to use. After you have paid for the package, you will be taken to private room where your tanning bed will be ready. Now you can lock the door and get ready for lying on the tanning bed. After exposing whichever parts of your skin you want to tan, apply tanning lotion all over those parts. Do not apply the lotion to your face as the heat may trigger an allergic reaction in the lotion. You should now put on the goggles provided by the sunless tanning studio, do not remove them until the tanning bed is off. The reason for the goggles is the UVA/UVB light from the tanning lamps is so strong that it can cause cataracts if your eyes are unprotected. They can even harm your eyes if you just close them with your eyelids; so remember to never remove the goggles when the lights are on. If you have long hair, remember to tie it up. If your hair gets in the way, you might get strange tan line on your skin. Also, bring along your own music player if you do not want to lie there on the bad in silence. Now it is time to turn on the unit; your attendant will have told you whether you need to press a single button or start a timer. If it is your first time in a sunless tanning studio, the usual duration would be between 5 to 10 minutes. If you are more used to it, the duration may be as long as half an hour. Now it is time to open the lid of the tanning bed and lie down on it.
