My wife, Judy, and I went on a European cruise just after Thanksgiving. One evening the main entertainment was a hypnotist who charmed the audience with the tricks she aroused from the eager volunteers who accepted her invitation to take part in that night's show. It really was a very fun experience for us, but also quite edifying as I've thought about it since, and I thought I might share some of my considerations with you.

Probably the key thing I was impressed with was that it seemed to me that pretty much everybody has some level of susceptibility to being hypnotized, enchanted, influenced by the powers of suggestion, refer to it as whatever you like. Some individuals are affected more easily, more quickly, more deeply, than others, but it really seemed to me that there is some mental maneuverability in all of us!

This was made apparant to me when the hypnotist, after initial introductions and background discussion, asked for participation from the audience. To do this, she coyly talked everybody present through some of the basics of hypnosis, touched on some of the what it is and what it is not details, all the while stimulating interest and easing objections.

Then she encouraged all those who may wish to learn for themselves how impressionable or resistant to the hypnotizing process they were to follow her instructions as she stepped through some of its basic parts. Here's where I realy perked up! I did't put all my attention on what the hypnotist was doing and saying, but rather kind of split 50/50 between her and the audience. I was astounded! Of course, I saw others like myself that were intentionally not letting themselves to follow along as mentally led by the hypnotherapist. There were others who were somewhat back and forth, in and out. And there were those who were willingly engrossed.

What I found most interesting was not that those who willingly participated experienced the highest degrees of influence, and those who actively refused were apparantly successful in their efforts. No, that's exactly what one should expect. But what I didn't foresee was that of those who didn't really participate nor really resist, many nonetheless underwent some degree of mesmerization that truly astounded themselves and those near them who witnessed it!

Well, if everybody who attended a performance such as this was successfully put into a spell, there would be no audience to appreciate the entertainment being presented, would there? However, my interest over what I observed that night certainly has been aroused and I'm actively seeking to learn more about it. I'll share more of my thoughts and findings on the subject in future writings, but for now I invite you to visit us at http://www.jujamvideoreview.com/coverthypnosis.html to find out more about this fascinating topic!
