How to Survive a Networking Event?

It is difficult to start a conversation with someone you do not know at an event. You can learn to engage others in meaningful and sincere conversation. This is not the time to do a sales pitch. There is a difference between meaningless banter that drives people away and meaningful small talk. They key is to ask the right questions and give them the opportunity to talk and you to listen. This involves planning ahead. Examples of some questions to results in learning more about the person without being too obtrusive:
1) Have you been a member of this organization long?
2) What do you like best about this group?
3) What organizations are you a member that is effective marketing for your business?
4) Do you know today’s speaker?
5) Are you involved in any committees?
6) Is this your city or home town?
7) What are your hobbies?
8) Ask them about their products, services and goals?
Do and Don’tr
Do ask for their business card - don’t hand them your card firstr
Do ask questions - don’t dominate the conversationr
Do ask them about their viewpoint - don’t challenge if ideas differr
Do be a good Listener - don’t butt into conversationsr
Do have a professional Name Tag - don’t wear name tag at social eventsr
Always have a pleasant smile - don’t be negative or argumentativer
Do maintain comfortable Eye Contact - don’t look over shoulder to others or
Avoid ethnic, gossip, rumors & sarcasm - don’t monopolize anyone timesr
Do introduce to others in room - don’t leave them standing along
Do provide resources - don't suggest resources you havent qualified
Networking effectively is the most cost effective marketing opportunity in today’s economy! Practice makes perfect. Attend those events at your local Chamber of Commerce and other business associations to generate those leads that will make your follow-up easier whether it’s by e-mail, phone or just dropping by to offer other resources for them to grow your business and in return to grow your business!
