Humor Boosts the Sick and Weary
Written by Allidah Hicks and Bonnie Knuti
- Disguises: Disguises are great for giving visitors or health care professionals a jolt and a good laugh! Look in toy, costume, or online stores for something fun (fake teeth, silly glasses, crazy hats, beards, mustaches, wigs, waxed lips, tattoos). These are a "must" for kids and teens, but they are also fun for adults and seniors as well.
- Funny videos: Look in your own collection, the library, or online for some funny topics. For those who have Internet access, some of the YouTube clips are hilarious. Find crazy animal antics, sports bloopers, or silly home videos. The sky is the limit.
- Gag gifts: These can be a pick-me-up and bring some comic relief even in the darkest of times. Imagine the fun a patient could have with the hospital staff or visitors with some fake barf, glow-in-the-dark boogers, or lifelike insects. You can find anything online!
- Funny card: We all love to get mail and an unexpected laugh. Spend some time in the gift card section and find something perfect!
- Stickers: These are easy to find and easy to use. Look for ones that are scratch-and-sniff, glow-in-the-dark, or have funny faces and hilarious sayings. The patient can either wear them or give them to visitors or their favorite hospital staff.
- Cartoons: Just clip a cartoon or two from the newspaper "funnies" section of your newspaper and send it by mail or deliver it in person. Or, you can give a humorous book that's devoted to the person's favorite comic.
- Funny old photos: Now that old photos can be easily scanned, hunt for some that will be a reminder of good times and lots of laughs.
- Funny or unique socks: Give the patient a chuckle and keep feet warm at the same time!
